The question is: "If it was one owner from new, why didn't it have the running in service, considering it was a free service.".
It also means BMW (or a private warranty) may not honor any warranty claim on engine, gearbox or differential as these are what the running in service is for (they swap out the running in oils with the normal operation oils).
The engine oil will have been changed at 12,000-15,000 miles anyway at a scheduled oil service, however the gearbox & diff oils will still be in there as they're not supposed to be changed until an Inspection 2 at around 45,000 miles. Some don't bother doing these extra oils - although they may still charge for it - so then you'll have running in oils in the gearbox & diff for the life of the car, which is not what they were intended for.
Then you've got to figure in the loss in resale value.
For me to be interested in it, it'd have to be £5k cheaper than a fully serviced one (not necessarily BMW - as I know from experience how bad their 'experts' can be), as I'd have to take into account the warranty issues regarding the engine & transmission (engine is £14k and you'd not get any 'goodwill' from BMW). I'd also thoroughly check with the seller that they've informed the warranty company that it missed a critical service and see written proof that they'd completely cover the engine & transmission.
A car with the running in service done, with a full BMW new car warranty still in place, with all the normal extras and in a premium colour scheme (i.e. not the yellow, sepang, or standard interlagos & black) should fetch £23k-£24k (although winter does depress prices), whereas I'd pay no more than £17k for one in yellow with this missed service.
It could be faultless, and you could have a bargain for years to come, but you'd always have to point out to any potential buyer or aftermarket warranty company that this inspection wasn't done - which ultimately means you probably wouldn't bother with an aftermarket warranty anyway.

hi sorry about the caps....
well the guy totally forgot about the running in service, and the dealership are saying that their warranty would cover it? if it does then is it worth 20k with an inspection 1 done for me and the new tyres at the back?
Get that conformation in writing from BMW GB as well as the dealer. Otherwise walk away.well the guy totally forgot about the running in service, and the dealership are saying that their warranty would cover it? if it does then is it worth 20k with an inspection 1 done for me and the new tyres at the back?

Why bother with such a potential pain in the arse when there are scores of them around for sensible money?

hi
the saving is 3000? is that not enough? how much would you guys pay for this spec? 07 with 32k in blue, sta nav, heated seats, xenons etc...?
for that car with the running in service complete a bmw dealer would offer you about 18.5k (i figured this from what they offered for my 57 with 23k, nav, dsp, bluetooth etc)the saving is 3000? is that not enough? how much would you guys pay for this spec? 07 with 32k in blue, sta nav, heated seats, xenons etc...?
so taking that missed service off they'd be offering 15k IMO (well assuming they'd buy it)

No. Not for me. Maybe a £5/6k saving would make me think twice, but why bother when there are plenty of others around that have been properly looked after. If the previous owner couldn't be bothered to get the 1200 mile service done, then what are the chances he / she let the car warm up properly before ragging it?
And the comments from everyone above have made it clear that when you come to sell it on, none of us would touch your car with a bargepole if there were others around with full service history. In my view, you'd have to discount it much more than £3k to get someone to take it off your hands.

Have you spoken to the previous owner, or are you taking the garage's word for what happened.well the guy totally forgot about the running in service, and the dealership are saying that their warranty would cover it? if it does then is it worth 20k with an inspection 1 done for me and the new tyres at the back?
Either way, you can forget to do the running in service, but you will remember at some point so why not get it done then?
I'm also sure there is a sticker on the windcreen/dash that says it must be done.

mmm-five. You speak absolute crap, yet know very little about motor-cars. On a high performance engine the oil should be changed every 4,000 to 6,000 miles. You spout absolute crap about gearbox/diff oils.
