Hello all

I've SORNd my TVR S2 over the winter, mainly so it keeps it in good nick but also to crack on with a few jobs.
One of them is to do something about the whining gearbox. It's been like this for the last 2k, and is not getting a lot worse yet, but I am keen to get a new box in there.

The car is running just over 180BHP and about 180lbsft, which I would imagine is a bit of a strain for a standard type 9 box.

Does anyone have any experience of sourcing/using a heavier duty box? I'm not after anything mega expensive as it is only for road use, but I want something that will last...ideally, a longer first would be good as well.

thanks in advance

What engine ? I'd think the TVR is a relatively light car though ?

T5 would probably be easiest bet ?

Yes, I have just the thing sat in my folks garage.

A Type 9 with an RS2000 alloy bellhousing. It has a taller first gear fitted, is fully synchro and helical. It has been pushed around a bit but has done NO MILES.

My mate bought a Fisher Fury Spider Lightweight which was fitted with a crazy rebuilt pinto engine (ex-rally escort). He decided to chuck this lot out and fit a bike engine. It's all sat there doing fk all and now he's bought a house and has big designs, work commitments, none of it is going to be finished. All of it is for sale and if he doesn't get rid of it, my folks will give it to the scrap man, as it's all been down there doing bugger all for a few years. It's in perfect nick and if you PM me, I'll send you his details.

The fisher has never been on the road.
The Pinto has not been run in.
The box has done 0 miles.

Anyway, get a price for a new one, 1/2 it and there you go.

I may know someone up for the box, who's building a Westfield currently if no one else wants this.........

Thanks chaps

I'm not sure if the box for a pinto will fit the cologne, as it will have a shorter input shaft, but ta for the offer...much appreciated.

I was thinking about the MT75 box but I'm not sure if there is space for it, so thought it best to just go for the uprated type 9.

Cheers

If you want me to go and examine it and report back, I shall.

I imagine the bellhousings are different and perhaps the release bearing....

Nice box though.

pinto and cologne are different because the input shaft is longer on the cologne, so won't fit

The link above to bghgeartech will take you to a company that will build a heavy duty V6 Cologne box and fit a standard input shaft for a Pinto.

Job done.

180Hp/180Lb/Ft will not give a type 9 much trouble.

My Tasmin (heavier than your S at a guess) has >260Hp/270Lb/Ft and fitted with a type 9, without problems.

I agree a T5 would be a nicer option but at £450+ just for a T5 to V6 bell, you need to give it some thought.

Regards,

Chris.
