Hi
at what year or model did the 'hotwire' replace the 'flapper' system?

I think they used both almost all the way through production. Mine's a 1990 450SE on a flapper system. thumbup

I guess that there may have been significant time differences between build and registration, given the limited numbers made. My early '89 400 was originally a flapper.

The 350SE's built from late 89 (reg 90's)where the first batch of Hot Wires. 1990 seems to have been a mixed year, most (all?) late 90 and 91 build are Hot Wire

as far as i know its the stuff from 90 onwards which could be hotwire...

I know my 400 flapper is pretty rare...

Hi
Do you get the banging/popping sound on the overrun, (mines a 400se (1990) with a 'hotwire') always wondered what would be required to convert it for the 'sound'.

my current 400se has the older style flapper on the air flow meter (hopefully thats what you are refering to)I am sure there is one or two more things need to change to achieve but to start you off ,i was given a spare airflow meter when i bought this 400 a couple of months ago you can have. If its any use let me know.

yes mine pops and bangs a bit more now I 've added some miles to the clock (last owner 2k / 9 years all mot's )
this weekend i was out pulling from around-about ,I nearly sh2t myself ,it sounded like a gun poping, pity all those folks a the bus stop.
still to set up the tps though which hopefully add some more.

Hi Stephen
that would be great, i'll look into what else is required (or different). Any news on the veneer off cuts?

My car is an 89 / 90 and has hotwire .. my guess it was converted from the flapper at some point but rather weirdly not of the wiring loom seems to suggest this .. weird.

Trying to go back .. i.e from hotwire to flapper would be a huge undertaking ..

You would need :

Flapper AFM
14 CU ECU
Loom
Cold start parts..

Could the flapper AFM just be substituted for the Hotwire AFM .. no idea .. perhaps a question for Mark Adams ..

Is it the flapper AFM or the crude analogue 14 CU which is responsible for the pops and bangs .. no idea. Sorry.

Quite frankly - if you have a hotwire it's probably easier to change to a Emerald (£1K) or mega squirt(£500) .. as both are fully user mapable .. you can then add the pops and bangs.

The 14CU and 14CUX are completely different ( the 14CU uses much more analogue circuitry) , so no parts are interchangable. You can get pops and bangs on the 14cux by altering the overrun fuelling and thats altering the chip, or you may be able to do it with messing sround with the CO trim value on the side of the AFM. It also helps to have a small amount of air getting in near the front of the exhasut to provide a bit of fresh oxygen, but its far from an exact science!!

Hotwire wedges can be boring(as far as pops are concerned ) after flapper type , will have to do a swap with Wayne ! Makes up a little in performance and fuel consumption though .

Alan,
As would need parts the following spring to mind, to go along with the old 14CU ECU:
- Other (older) injectors
- A resistor pack to make them work at the correct voltage
Or is it easy to run the newer (improved) later injectors that easy from the flapper ECU?

Well done - I knew there was something in that area I missed but could not think of it.

I had Mark Adams remap my hotwire .. wanted flames, pops bangs etc.. but he could not get any. I think he had enough on his plate with the wild cam I was having put in .. as it was initially it drove very horribly .. but he had another go and mapped it a lot more finely and they it was a pully cat smile

Looks like not much use you having the afm , considering all the comments ,if things progress you know I have one for you.
The strips are a bit of a problem as the cut required is too narrow and keeps breaking . I will send you a wider section of the material left over and you will have to try.(maybe better if glued to the strip first)
