totally out of date but anyone know a site listing firmware updates for older Nikon cameras?

D70s specifically.

According to the Nikon website, there is not and has never been a firmware update for the D70s.

Were you looking for something in particular to be improved or added as there may be a third party hack available?

Nothing too specific -- it's an old camera - just curiosity...

although if there was a 3rd party way to allow RAW + fine quality jpg - that would be very useful.

At moment it only allows RAW + Basic quality - not a huge problem - but it would be nice to uprate it!

Anyone know if Nikon changed this for the D80 or D90?

The site is very slow (thought it was my end), I did get the D3 off ok though after persevering.

Which were you after John? Didn't think you had any of the above, but I can download and e-mail if you wish.

The D200 offers RAW with every JPG option - S/M/L and Large/Fine/Basic

I was curious to see if they had changed the D700 display options, but it's unlikely.

The firmware for the D70 was updated and on subsequent launch the later firmware incorporated in the 's. Did exactly the same for the D2x and D2xs. I think it's the Nikon way. So I wonder what all the tweaks are to the latest models scratchchin

I am thinking of replacing the D70s at some point -- it has been massively used / abused!

Not sure what to get next but it could well be a D80 --

If you can, spend the extra for the D200. Much better than the D80.
better at higher Iso's? that's what i'd like

Ah yes of course banghead

The following improvements have been made in A and B firmware Ver. 1.02

- Auto white balance performance has been improved.
- Support for 64 GB memory cards has been added.
- When ISO sensitivity settings>ISO sensitivity auto control in the shooting menu is set to On, the Maximum sensitivity option can now be specified in steps of 1/3 EV, 1/2 EV or 1 EV, according to the Custom Setting b1 ISO sensitivity step value setting.
- The length of time the camera waits before adjusting focus in response to sudden changes in the distance to the subject can now be selected from 5 (Long) , 4, 3 (Normal), 2, and 1 (Short) from Custom Setting a4 Focus tracking with lock-on. With the increase in the number of options for Custom Setting a4 Focus tracking with lock-on, this item will be set to 3 (Normal) after firmware upgrade. Adjust this setting as needed.
- When the camera’s AF-ON button is pressed, the monitor turns off and a focus point can now be selected using the multi selector.
- When the MB-D10 AF-ON button is pressed (with AF-ON selected for Custom Setting a10 AF-ON for MB-D10), the monitor now turns off and a focus point can be selected using the multi selector.
- A Use GPS to set camera clock item has been added to the GPS item in the setup menu. When Yes is selected, date and time information acquired via connection to a GPS device is used to set the camera’s internal clock. After selecting Yes for the first time, turn the camera off and then on again to reacquire GPS data.
- When Enable is selected for GPS>Auto meter off in the setup menu, the time until meters turn off is now extended by up to 1 minute to enable camera acquisition of GPS data immediately after the camera is turned on, and immediately after meters turn on. (only with GPS Unit GP-1)
- When On is selected for Long exp. NR problems were experienced when shooting at shutter speeds slower than 1 s but faster than or equal to 8 s. This issue has been resolved.
- An issue that prevented display of the focus point with playback of images captured with continuous shooting has been resolved.
- When the virtual horizon was displayed with shooting in live view tripod mode and live view was then cancelled, the focus point displayed in the viewfinder could not be moved. This issue has been resolved.
- When some memory cards were inserted in the camera, “CHA” was displayed in the top control panel and images could not be captured. This issue has been resolved.
- When [M] exposure mode was used in live view shooting via Camera Control Pro 2, the electronic analog exposure display did not function. This issue has been resolved.

No need to bother! Search for a tool called "Instant JPEG from RAW", and try it. It strips the thumbnail out of the RAW file (that is used for preview on the camera etc) and saves to a separate jpeg. Only it isn't a thumbnail... On my D300 if I take a shot on RAW+JPEG fine, extract the "thumbnail" from the RAW file using IJFR I have a jpeg that is identical to the jpeg fine saved by the camera at the time of capture. If you load the IJFR jpeg and camera jpeg on different layers in the same file in photoshop and "blink" the two layers they are identical (this is confirmed by switching the top layer blend mode to "Difference", there are no pixels that are not totally black).

Your D70 may not be the same, the old RAW format may have changed, but if it's the same as the D300 RAW+jpeg is a total waste of space - the jpeg is saved anyway...

That sounded good so I've now got this file InstantJPEGFromRAWExt.dll what do I do with it?!

Ah, spoke too soon - sussed it! It appears with a right click on the file. Works with D300s *.NEF files too. Creates a Jpeg that has the same unprocessed state native to the RAW file. In other words, it doesn't apply a 'picture control' rendition, landscape or portrait or whatever, that creation of a Jpeg in camera does. Easily fixed though and using this utility increases memory card space for me of 40%. Thanks! And my friends Sandisk send their regards.....
