I'm a Nikon person, but a used 40D looks to be a massive bargain at the moment at some of the prices I've seen them going for.

Mate of mine has one, hers has been back to Canon twice for random shutter errors/firmware probs. I think you'd run that risk with anything second hand though. ETA - 20k doesnt sound excessive

40D shutter life is supposed to be 100,000

This may tell you what the real count currently is http://astrojargon.net/40dshuttercount.asp

40D Was a complete bargain at the end of its 'life' even more so now, cracking PQ and enough features to keep anyone busy.

Had my 40D for over two years now. Must have taken well above 20,000 shots with it, and it's completely abused (in all weather). Still works a treat (touch wood) wink

Excellent camera though, cannot fault it at all!

if you are worried about shutter actuations , look at buying from a reliable source , most decent camera shops offer a six month warranty on there used kit

Not a massive factor, because as every one will point out you cannot guarantee against random problems, but I went for a higher end secondhand body for the very reason that they won't wear out (that soon). They are quite tough little Bu... ...bits of kit... generally.

My '2x was designed around a 250,000 shutter actuation life IIRC, and I just looked at the file info to see I am still only up to number 53,259. That sort of equates to a life of 100,000, for a so-called "lesser build quality" model only having 20,000 releases so pretty much a bargain if it's still got 80% of it's potentail average working life in front of it?

For amateur use, I managed to hammer in 8,500 shots in the first three months I had mine, but you're going to be hard pushed to burn up at much more of a rate than that, I'd humbly suggest. That takes your purchase round to lasting about 30 months?

Put it this way, would you turn down a used BMW, Merc or Audi merely on the grounds that it had 50k on the clock?

Same with mine - bulletproof -its currently lying on the floor with lens and flash attached, after taking some random pics of my daughter, and i know when I go to pick it up to use later it'll work great. Awesome.
