How close can I get to Italy with the car, but without having to drive it all the way down there? Someone told me that it is possible to get to the South of France on a train with the car, but don't know the truth of this.

hehe Toyota Landcruiser. It would be a nice, easy and comfortable drive, but it would hardly be exciting!

confused

Start early - get to Interlaken in first day. Stay 2 nights. Head out of Interlaken early on departure day across the pass and you'll be in Italy be teatime. Drive it!

You can take the motorail from s'Hertogenbosch in Holland (3 hours from Calais) to Italy:

That looks brilliant until you get down to the bottom and discover that a Landcruiser is too tall!

Bugger.

silly question but are you sure they don't have commercial vehicle spaces as well similar to the channel tunnel?

My guess is not, as it appears to be essentially a tourist train. I agree that it's worth checking though, so will!

TBH I will probably end up just flying and hiring a car. Wanted to explore the possibilities first.

Just drive it. It's about 10.5 hours from North London to the Italian end of the Mont Blanc tunnel including the Chunnel crossing and 2 fuel stops; adjust as necessary for your starting point.

What is the name of the train ? Is it one of the ones mentioned above ?

now you're asking!!

not done it for a good 20 years but Railsavers go from Den Bosch (NL) to either Livorno or Alessandria

all I'm finding is that motorail (France) is discontinued
