E91 325i Touring - ticking noise from engine
Discussion
Morning all,
Very cold here in Dorset this morning (-6C according to the car).
Went out to de-ice the car for the Mrs to drive to work, and noticed that the engine is ticking quite loudly. Not just when first started, but continuously at idle whilst I was cleaning the ice off the windows, and was apparently still doing it when she got to work. I'm not very mechanical but it sounds like ticking tappets, which I remember from knackered old Fords when I first started driving in the 80s
Car is a 2005, but has only done 36k miles.
Is this something I should be worried about, or is it just likely to be the cold weather?
Cheers,
Steve.

Steve,
Sounds like it's the injectors. The newer models with direct injection do sound "tappety" at idle and this is down to the injectors. Having said that, not sure if a 2005 is direct injection. I'm sure one of the beards will be along shortly to put me right!

To update... BMW Emergency Service have taken the car away on a low-loader. They reckon the hydraulic tappets (one or more) have stuck, and that if we had kept driving, it could have siezed the engine. So glad I called
AUC warranty seems pretty good. Turned up within 2 hours, and are currently sorting us a hire car.
