I have an employee who's pregnant and instead of taking my offer of continuing work part time & training etc, has decided she wants to have a year or two out.

Now, knowing she has little money, her partner only works part time and they're currently living with parents, what are they likely to be entitled to?

Council flat/house? Dole money? I'm trying to paint a reasonably realistic picture of what life's going to be like to her!

It's going to be st.

Two years down the line, she'll have no qualifications, no experience, rusty skills and a toddler.

As she's got somewhere to live (ie with parents) then I'd imagine it unlikely that she'll get any housing as she isn't in dire straits.

Free house, Sky TV, as many fags as she can smoke, plenty of disposable income, holiday once a year, latest clothes and video games......

Sorry, I am basing this on what I see in Andover most days.

If you like I can write her a cheque directly and cut out the middle man.

Did you mean 'What else is my company going to have to shell out for that everyone and his dog is entitled to these days because they take the conscious decision to add to the bulging population when theres nothing more exciting to do, then expect everyone else in the world to owe them a debt of gratitude - plus expenses obviously' perhaps? wink

If he works more than 16 hours, then can they not claim both working and familt tax credits?

She should also look into a 'sure start' grant...not sure if it's still called that, but it is a sum of money given to expecting mothers, who can not claim other benefits (or I think that is the reason for it)

As for a free house....hahaha As far as my local council know, I am still homesless with a young child, yet I have had no offers of a house in the 31 months!

Don't forget free rent when she proves she 'needs' a council flat, discounted gas and electric and water, free school dinners, free bus pass, free entry to school trips and activities, free rent, free college for herself if she wants to go, free everything basically.

I think she's doing the wrong thing. Since being made redundant at the end of my maternity leave I've had problems finding any kind of part time job, least of all one which would help me develop my career further. Have you discussed this with her?

She is 19 and with child, heavy lifting would just be to much for the poor girl.

Yup - she's adament she wants at least a year with the baby despite the fact i've offered her work from home, very part time, evening work. I think she thinks she's gonna be better off NOT working.

But she's entitled to a year off in maternity leave, and then she could work part time. It really annoys me that someone can be so short sighted, especially as she doesn't have a clue about how she will feel after the baby arrives.
