Macro fans! Anyone fancy an outing?
Discussion
Hi All,
Once again, the RHS at Wisley (just off the A3/M25 junction) is populating their tropical house with butterflies from the 16th of January to the 28th of February. When I went last year, it was pretty much the first time I'd used my macro lens, so I'm keen to go back and see how much I've improved in the intervening year!
Anyone up for making a bit of a PH outing of it? I'm thinking pick a weekend date, then aim to be there ready and waiting by the doors to the glasshouse when it opens at 10 before it gets too busy.

ohhh sounds like a great idea.
Got into photography last year and realy enjoy taking the close up macro shots, although not great at it yet and really need a dedicated lens but not sure what to get.
So would be great to meet up and get some tips and meet others with the same passion for photography.

I'd suggest we leave it a couple of weeks. It's on for 6 weeks or so - this weekend until the end of February - so we might as well let the initial rush get out of the way first.
Whatever happens, there will be more than just snow. unsurprisingly, there isn't any snow in the tropical glasshouse!

I went to Wisley on Sunday around 1.30pm and it was packed so really recommend getting there for 10am when it opens. I was a little disappointed by the fact that not many of the butterflies have actually hatched although those which have are very lethargic so you can get up close quite easily. It is very very hot in the glasshouse and they are using misters so make sure you have a cloth to clean your lenses with.
Here are a few shots that I took

I was thinking to go this coming Saturday morning. I have to play these things slightly carefully at the moment, what with vanishing every Saturday afternoon to watch the 6 Nations games.
It's a shame they're not there during the Oikball World Cup, as I'll bank loads of brownie points then by not giving a toss whilst all Mrs Kermit's friends are bemoaning the loss of their husbands!

having got stuck in London I visited the butterfly house at London Zoo, tried the TC atatched to the ef 100 and didn't get one shot I was proud of (poor light & no tripod)
managed to get an incredible wasp though, cant remember the name, this was the best shot of the day

wont be going to another one now as spring has just started where I live

It's not a tripod you need, it's a ring flash and full manual settings.
always get better results with tripod as I have a nerve problem in my right hand

I am up for going again on Saturday, will be good to try and improve on my shots and maybe gain some useful advice and tips from all of you
I have membership for Wisley so can take a guest for free if you are interested.
