Our 2nd child is due around July (1st will only be 18mths old by then) so my 330ci has to go...

Missus has a golf which is excellent for family, but won't carry a double buggy in the boot.

I reckon £4k part ex on mine (2001 330ci) - plus £6k - total budget £10k

Any suggestions? (Q7 is lovely, but double my budget) quite like Volkswagen Toureg(?) and an early X5, but know little about them (i.e. MPG/Big boot/4x4 option handy in next years snow??)

Any suggestions on what people ferry to buy?

VW Touran.
I bought an 04 plate. Plenty of room for family, buggy etc.
Couple of 12V supplies to keep things like fridge or hotbox powered.

Surprisingly quick in 140 BHP Diesel guise.....

Buy a roofbox for the Golf - £300-odd ought to do it.

Failing that, sell the missus' Golf as it's plainly not big enough, and buy her any mid-size estate/hatchback. You really don't need a Chelsea tractor for 2 kids.

Mazda 5 Sport - though if you ever have a 3rd child, using the 3rd row of seats will remove the buggy stowage space again (hence the current "3 in the back" Mondeo). Sliding rear doors are fantastically kid-friendly.

Other than that aren't the Volvo XC90s supposed to be good.

One of these, or a 530i or 540i smile

That Mazda 5 recommended by LuS1fer is a very neat & practical piece of kit

Why does your coupe have to go?

I wouldn't even consider buying an MPV just because I have another kid on the way. It'll only be a few months before the associated clutter starts to die down & then you'll be left with a st car with too much space.

BUMP -

Only just selling my car (330ci) and budget is now lower

Any recomendations what to buy for £5k

Needs to be good for 2 adults, 1 toddler and 1 baby
I'm leaning towards maybe an estate (7-8yr old deisel bmw/or audi a4)??

Would prefer something newer than my current (2001) if possible

Subaru Legacy would be my choice, although not the most fuel efficient.

MG ZT-T
BMW 5 series (but you'll be looking at MY2000 ish and 70K ish miles)
Mondeo estate (not much image, but good to drive, plenty about and cheap to fix)
Volvo v70 (same provisos as for 5 series)

£5k should get you a good B5 Passat (old model). Huge boot, tons of legroom in the rear and bomb proof mechanicals and bodywork. Best engines are the 130 bhp petrol or the TDi.

Impreza estate.

Everybody wins.

We've transported our two children and all their crap (even on holiday), so if you can't do it day-to-day, you are not trying.

shame budge smaller than originally hoped because i noticed this:
http://pistonheads.com/sales/1731791.htm

you could look at the mondeo st estate. that's plenty pig enough to keep you going for a while yet reasonably fund to drive. probably not loads at the money though.

i think looking for an e39 530i (ideally sport) would a be good thing for you to do though.

you never know you might find someone who'd like to do a direct swap (or close to) as someone might be in the reverse situation (who knows).
