Hi guys,

Mods, please feel free to move this into the relevant section.

Basically, me and the girlfriend have just moved into our first house together. We're looking at home phone/broadband packages, but all the websites i have been on cant look for connecticity in the area etc etc without a phone number. We obviously have a phone line in the property, but have no idea what our phone number is or how to go about getting allocated one. Would it be a case of having to get the phone line reconnected?

Any help would be much apprecieated as i have no idea!

Cheers,

Mark

http://www.broadbandchecker.co.uk/ - Will tell you by a postcode.

To get a connection, you need to get a provider. BT charge £120+ VAT (from memory). Sky will do a deal if you take phone/BB/Sky etc. BT sometimes offer free connections, so phone up saying you've seen an advert for it and see if they offer you it.

You could get cable, if its in your area...

I've recently moved into a flat (3 months ago), it had a phone line socket but no activate line.

We had to go online round my Parents house and sign up with BT. I think we just gave our address and said that we had a certain type of phone socket/line already installed.

We got a new number and a date for activation.

We paid nothing for ours, well maybe a £10 connection fee but nothing really. I think £120 is if they have to come out and install a new line from scratch.

Nope, brother had a line to his house, they still wanted £120 to connect it. Greedy fkers.

OP, your best bet is to phone BT up, the address will be listed if there is a box in the property and see what they say.

I moved in to my house in September. Went online on BTs website (via my mobile) and signed up for the basic phone package, £11.25 a month. They connected it in two weeks and didn't charge anything for it. I already had a phone line in the house. The £120 is for installing a phone line I think!

Then I signed up for the internet with o2.

Yeh, that does seem to be the best way of going about it i think, going with BT for the home phone and then choosing someone else for the broadband.

I believe the £120 or whatever is only if they need to install a new line, or if the previous line was cut off for non-payment.

We certainly didn't pay a penny to have our BT landline switched back on again here.

You'll have to go to BT in the first instance to get the line activated, etc. After that you can swap to whoever you like.
