Basically decided to finally move from google instructions to a sat nav. My immediate reaction was buy the cheapest basic TomTom / Garmin or whatever as I assume it'll act as a moving map,. i.e. be what I'd expect of a sat nav no more, not less all fine.

Garmin 255 £84

or

TomTom £84

However I wondered about functions that may make me spend a bit more. The only one I can think of is working off road for when I go mountain biking, have it in my pocket and if I get lost know where I am,.. so with that in mind any recommendations or do ones with off road maps cost loads?

AFAIK Garmin is a better choice for offroad as there are no official Tomtom offroad maps comparable to the Topo GB map for Garmin, although there may be third-party solutions available for Tomtom.

Just been reading the Topo reviews on amazon,.... not good.. sounds a bit crap really not actually showing footpaths etc... and its £111 for the maps!
