At the risk of repeating a topic already covered, I've just configured a conservatively specced Golf R on the VW website and it came out at over £35,000. Am I missing something? It'll be a great car, very well engineered I'm sure but £35,000, that's the cost of a lightly used e90 M3. The recaro seats alone are over £3000. I can't imagine many people parting with that much money for a Golf. I know I wouldn't.

Cool story bro.

So you're comparing a brand new car to a used car ?

Go spec it's competitors and get back to me smile

It is a bit stupid.

One of my customers specced one up and it was £38k.

He went over to Audi and specced an S4 to the same and that came out at £39k, however, he got 9% off the S4 making it cheaper.

The M1 has been given the go ahead too with an estimated cost of £38k.

I drive a 135i at the moment and really like the sound of the M1 ( or whatever they'll call it ) If they can make it a bit lighter with about 30 or 40 bhp more it'll be just about right.

To be fair, you're not going to get a lightly used M3 for £35,000.

You're going to get one that's getting on for two and a half years old, that has probably been through two, three or maybe more owners.

However I agree, it would have to be a pretty special Golf that would have me parting with £35,000, and I don't think the new R is.

I would rather save £10,000 and get a pre registered Insignia VXR.

Whats really silly is you can buy a Mazda 3 MPS specced equally as highly for 8 grand less, thats not even trying either.
However i would'nt drive a Mazda so thats just stupid.

40k for a Golf/S3 is just madness. I could not forsee me being able to buy a new one untill i'm probably 50!

Let's not forget that these new models are nearly 30% more expensive for no other reason than the exchange rate. The existing versions are being subsidised at the moment, so are the new ones, but not nearly as heavily.
