clicking from behind dash- just cant locate it!!!
Discussion
Hello- my first post.
I'm currently using my brothers s3 here in NZ- its for sale so i have to iron out some bugs before selling it. The worst thing is not a biggie but its bloody annoying! When cruising there is a fairly loud clicking coming from behind the dash. Its to the left of centre and up fairly high.
If i accelerate even lightly it goes and if i slow down it goes. If i push the clutch in it goes but then if i rev the car lightly it comes back.
My guess is that its the oil pressure gauge. I have sat my hand on it whilst its clicking and cant really feel it though. Plus the sound seems to be more to the left.

Hi Eddy
You probably know that the relays etc are all tucked up behind the glove box in the area you are describing so I suggest you get access to them - they'll probably just drop down when you remove the carpet panel below them, then have someone drive while you test/feel/listen to whats going on with the relays and hopefully you will find the culprit. good luck
Its a pity your brother is selling but it would be nice if you point the new owner to this site so he/she can keep in touch... there cant be many S's in NZ.

A bit of a long shot but if it seems to be related to power on and power off then could it be something in the engine bay tapping on the engine bay side of the bulkhead/footwell area?
If it is related to engine rock then it would be worth while looking at the state of the engine mounts.
I think that the speedo on the S3 is electronic, so there is no mechanical cable behind the dash?

Hiya- sorry for late reply....been buying cheap toyota vans and riding pushbikes.....
Anyway- thanks for replies!
Took it another few drives recently - on last two drives the sound didn't start immediately and then away it starts. click click click. bloody annoying because the rest of the car is lovely smooth quiet. It definately sounds like its coming from the left side of the dash- not from the oil gauge.
Its not under acceleration or deceleration- its at steady cruising- slow or faster- 100kph. Really funny one- if it was a exhaust manifold leak or crack it would show under acceleration. if it was something rubbing it would be all the time. Its very consistant. Do the colonge engines have hydraulic lifters? - as sometimes they can click.
hmmmmmm- maybe i'll hire a dwarf to sit in the engine bay with a bloody torch.....

bugger- im sure i just replied but must have hit the wrong button- damn! long slow post into thin air!
anyway- cheers for replies.
noise still there- it sometimes wont start till after 10 mins.
cant be gauge- it definitely from lh side of dash. and only happens on cruise- not acceleration or deceleration. at any speed.
could it be a sticky hydraulic lifter (if colognes have have them?- essex dont but....)

I think I agree with ketvrin from earlier in this thread in that my money would be on a dodgy relay in the fuse box clicking away merrily on its own. Good luck
Cheers.....Tony..
edited to say that what I would do is lower the fuse box etc to the floor and then go for a drive with a passenger studying the fuse box and see if they can locate further the noise.

are we talking about a TVR here???????????????????
Perhaps they have to have quiet exhausts in NZ?
Bob
Yeah- when its being nailed its loud(ish) but when cruising its super quiet- just wind noise with top down.
I'm loving thiis car now- its taken a few trips to really get the proper hang of it but now its all falling into place. We have been running it on BP ultimate and it seems to be really cleaning it out and the missing/hesitation is pretty much gone.
I think the main fact is that dad drove it on too many short town trips and its just now getting its cobwebs blown out!
We did another 150 mile trip the other day and the last bit was a section through the Queen Charlotte drive to picton- this is a twisty 35 km road- hardly a straight road in it! early evening and not another car in sight. HEAVEN!
The click is still there though.....
Oh and Ignition switch wont turn off properly- when key is removed the dash lights stay on. So had to disconnect batt.
Is it a seirra switch? taking it apart today.

hello again,
Ive taken ignition switch out and it seems all intact. Maybe something inside it is buggered but i dont think so- its a sealed unit and like some others i have taken apart they are pretty simple and robust.
Could there be something else thats keeping the dash lights on? its only the ignition, brake, oil lights.
I have the owners manual but no wiring diagram- does anyone here have one posted up somewhere?
OH- and the ticking...... i found the fuel pipe pushed against the baulkhead- i have moved it away and will look forwards to next drive to see if it solves it!

I've seen this caused before by a faulty alternator, but I think that was ignition lamp only on, and seen it again with very wierd goings on that turned out to be a damaged wiring loom where it had previously been impacted.Ive taken ignition switch out and it seems all intact. If you disconnect the alternator DO NOT start the engine with it disconnected or you will need a new one for sure, and be careful with the live terminals that you don't touch an earth.
It could also be something that has been wired incorrectly, like an aftermarket alarm for instance.

A late reply but better than never eh...
Thanks for the help guys!
Right! The ticking was caused by the fuel line touching the bulkhead. Glad its gone!
And the ignition fault was the hazard light combination switch. (bloody fords) so the hazard lights have been disabled now. need a new switch.
The car is now for sale. I have listed it on trademe NZ...
