Probably going to be a fruitless question, but sod it.

I'm going to be ordering a macbook pro, and as much as I'd like a 13 inch I'm concerned it'll be too small a display for any useful AV work. I've got a 27 inch imac too but I'd like to be able to edit audio and video outside of the house too, as it'd help a project I'm about to start massively. I don't mind buying a 15 inch one, but I'd really rather have the 13 if at all possible.

So, anyone with a 13 inch macbook that uses final cut / logic pro / garage band and so on? In the unlikely event that there is, I'd love to hear some feedback (pun not intended) about how you find it. Do you regret not going for the 15, is the display big enough when you're working with the programs etc?

i do a lot of editing on my macbook, which i think is a 13 inch screen. it is too small, but it serves its purpose. I use it for capturing footage, or doing rough cuts away from home. At the moment, im using it at work for some motion graphic work, but i just need more screen room.

At home, i plug into a much larger monitor, and then i can work with a 2 monitor setup. im annoyed i forgot to bring the adapter i need, so i could have plugged into a monitor at work.

The problem is once you factor in all the tool bars and other bits you need to have on screen, on a 13 incher, there isnt much room for the video windows. While its ok for cutting video, im forever moving windows about. And when it comes to motion graphics and colour correction, its a PITA not being about to see the video at 1:1 resolution. - thats why i like 2 monitor setup at home, 1080p HD on my big external monitor, and all the tool bars and other bits on the laptop screen.

I dont regret going for the 13inch macbook though- i got a great price, and its lasted me a good 2 years, and ive done all sorts with it. Even editing 1080p25, in a h264 codec (just started to get a bit laggy), but next time i would consider moving up to a 15 or 17 inch pro, just because im doing more and more motion graphics these days.

I do quite a lot of motion graphics, as well as the more usual cutting and hacking.

Pretty much exactly what I expected to hear regards the screen being a bit on the small side. Hmmmm, p'raps I'll go for a 15.

if you can afford to, id go larger, but if like me, you hardly get paid, then you can get by with the 13!

I went through the MacBook buying process recently, and the thing that decided which model I went for was the availability of the antiglare screen. The glossy screen looks great, but I couldn't imagine doing critical work on it on location.

I use a 15" one at work for 3D graphics/animation I find it to lack screen space even using a second 19" monitor although this is only a temporary solution till my work buy me a 3D BOXX 8500.

I would go for the 17" if your budget can stretch that far and it doesnt need to be too portable.

I'm not on a budget, but I don't want a 17 inch one, I've had a few 17 inch laptops now and they're just too heavy to be carrying around for prolonged periods.

I think I'll probably go for a 15 inch as a happy medium, though I'd much prefer a 13 if it was a viable alternative.

As for screens, I've got the 27" imac, and a few dell 24 inch ones in the office, so it's not a problem when at home, but we've got a few big road trips coming up which we'll be recording, and I'd like to be able to do some of the editing as we go.

As for the 3D Boxx... nice! Pretty nice piece of kit by the looks of it!

Yeah they are supposed to be pretty good, if my Intel i7 machine at home is anything to go by the performance of the BOXX should be staggering.
Although it could still be a month until it is ordered frown.

A very kind offer Fordo, much appreciated. Unfortunately I'm way up north so can't take you up on it. frown

I'll go against the grain here then!

I have a imac 24" and a macbook 13" which I think is spot on size wise for everything. I agree with others that for full on A/V work away from home the 15" may be a bit easier, but for surfing the interweb from the sofa or bedroom or outside in the summer, the 13" is the perfect blend of size and portability.

The 15" is quite a lot bigger and heavier to lug about with you.

13" macbook screens are crap imho. Resolution is too low. Was very disappointed with the macbook air I bought.

Then again my imac is even more annoying as it can't be properly calibrated as brightness won't go low enough.

Just a quick reminder that if you get into efficient use of 'spaces' some of the frustration of small screen can go away.
