New computer - "wmv" player problems

I assume latest release of Windows media player. I am having sound distortion and on some clips also degraded colour changing to black and white with coloured strips along top!

Have tried changing master volume control but don`t know what else to try.

Have you downloaded any codec packs lately. I dl'd the Nimo pack a few weeks ago and it completely screwed music reproduction on my lap top. Uninstalled it and its fine.

No, its basically everything I play through the Windows media player including cd`s (sound) and a couple of vids play with distorted colours.

DVD player plus Pinnacle plays with no distortion etc - it just seems to be the Windows player!

I get distortion in media player if I have it's volume slider too high or if I put media players grahic equaliser sliders much above +2 in the lower freq bands - I guess it's output is a bit high for my soundcards input.

I solve the problem by putting the media player volume slider no higher than about 75% and let my external amp do the work of giving me loud undistorted sound by cranking it's volume up instead!
