Starting to seriously consider a second set of cheap wheels and winter tyres as the M3 has been a disaster in the snow (PS2's).

I usually drive to the Alps for annual family skiing holiday, but having reservations about that given my experience over the past few days in the snow.

Anybody done this and have any recommendations on rims and tyres?

There is an official set of 18" winter alloys and tyres that you can order from BMW, but it will cost over £2k.

If you check the sizes and offsets, you may be able to find a set of steel wheels, but I doubt it.

The official winter wheels are prohibitally expensive. In Switzerland, there were quite a few E46 M3s running around on 318 steelies/alloys with winter tyres fitted and they were coping fine with the snow.

I have a set of the winter wheels and tyres for the M5. They are generally on for four months. This is my fourth winter with the car, so they've cost me about £600 a year so far or £150 for each month they've been on the car. I think that's good value, particularly compared with driving a car ona set of ugly steel wheels for 1/3 of each year.

You sure they weren't just the standard 18" M3 wheels? Anything less than 18" won't fit over the front brakes.

try Atu.de

You can go through a automated winter tyre and wheel thingy. Thats where most of my German mates get theres from.

Not sure if they deliver to the uk but its worth asking.

Certainly not the standard M3 18s. Possibly were an M tech wheel? I'm not really familiar with the E46 3 series. I only saw a couple running around on steelies from a distance. I was certain that they had the M3 bumpers and skirts.

Are your winter set different sizes to the summer set?

I have 19's on my M3 and was thinking of going to a slightly smaller and narrower wheel for a winter set.

I haven't bought a new set of wheels for a car since I was a teenager and Wolfrace alloys were considered cool. So its a bit of a learning process for me.

BMW winter tyres come on 18s and are a 235 section tyre.

The winter set are 245/45/18 all round (summers are 255/40/19 and 285/35/19).

the M3 winter wheels are like these:

I just bit the bullet & bought a set of OEM 18's for the M3 e92 and put winter tyres on them - Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme, 235/40/18 & 255/40/18. I normally run the OEM 19's, but it seemed that the choices for winter tyres was less for this size, and this way I can just swap them back over myself come March. I ran out of patience continually clearing the snow from my road so I could get out! I did all this for around £1400, and I still have a full set of brand new PS2's off the 18's to sell..

Can I ask you Zod if you informed your insurance company of the change of wheels/tyres? Is it necessary..?

No. They are standard equipment.

Sounds a great deal. Can you explain how that worked? I think I must have misunderstood. You bought 18 inch wheels, 18 inch PS2's and 18 inch Vredesteins, all for £1,400?

Yes, bought the wheels with tyres off eBay for just over 700, and the vreds for the same. Need to pay to get them fitted tho'.

Not sure if my set up would count as 'standard equipment' as it's not the OEM winter wheel and tyre set. I might have to check, being untrusting of insurance companies.

I can't confirm from experience, however it might be possible to fit 17" steels over the brakes as the wheel design could allow better clearance for the calipers. Under the awoken arches, a narrow steel would look comically small. In this weather looks ain't everything of course.

well..add to my costs the increase in my premium for putting on winter tyres of...£115! Thats Privilege insurance. Doesn't matter what the wheels are, its related to the cost of them - between 1K & 2K. Heads up for anyone thinking of doing this.

In late November I purchased and fitted four 18” M6 replica wheels (ET 20) complete with Michelin Alpin PA3’s ‘W’ rated 245/40 R18 tyres for my E92 M3 to replace the 19" PSC+ for the winter months. After the weather we've had in Scotland over the last month, during which the car has been in constant use, I can only describe the tyres as fantastic. No question in my mind that if I hadn't fitted them the car would have stayed in my garage for the duration. The level of grip was astounding in both the snow, ice and wet. Only problem is I now need to save up for a new set of 19" PSC+ for the summer as the old ones are worn out after only 8000 miles...

amendment. Couldn't quite believe this, so I phoned back and spoke to someone a little more sensible.. As long as they are OEM rims, the tyre change is an "upgrade" but incurs no cost. Need to let them know though. Phew!
