Replacement 156 windscreen
Discussion
Just noticed a lovely big crack in my screen. It's in the NS lower corner, running parallel with the wiper blade, looks about 5-6" long so presumably too big to repair? To top it off, I've now noticed I don't have windscreen cover (
) so what sort of money am I looking at to get a new one fitted?
) so what sort of money am I looking at to get a new one fitted?Similar bill for mine, albeit the insurance coughed up. But, the odds & sods added up as well: the two plastic shrouds, a new rubber across the bulkhead which split when it came off & I did the pollen filter at the same time, as it's under there as well - you don't have to do all that, of course, but the screws tend to be pretty knackered after years of hard graft, & the plastic isn't great, anyway.
Prices will vary from one extreme to the other; at least one of the larger national companies will quote IRO of around £500.00 with about 30% if you are an AA member.
There are one-man-band operations who are looking to make a quick 30-40 quid and will slap a screen in for something like £85-140 depending on where they get their glass from (and how!).
Much will depend on your area.
If you're still in the market, let me know your area and I'll personally recommend someone.

Yeah...how hard can it be
...to have it done properly and pay an invoice?Seriously, if the broken glass costs mega money, I can understand the breaker route; for example, a 2001 Toyota Celica heated rear window costs in excess of 400-quid for the glass alone.
A 156 is not a rare car and for the sake of a bit of shopping around to get the best deal / quality / guarantee + a NEW chip-free and scratch-free windscreen, I can't see the point in messing about with breakers.

All sorted now, thanks for all the info chaps.
Glassman was right, there was a massive difference in the figures. Autoglass kicked off with a highly competitive quote of £430(!), which they later decided could go down to £240
. Ended up getting it done with a local for £150 and they seem to have done a pretty tidy job.
