Didn't actually see the piece but this morning on Breakfast there was an "advert" about swimmers who were live, at 6.30am or there abouts in an outdoor swimming pool.
Has anyone here ever done anything like that and if so how the hell (and why the hell
) did you manage it?
I used to swim in the outdoor pool at my gym, it was heated, but you wouldn't know it at 6.30am as it felt freezing!Has anyone here ever done anything like that and if so how the hell (and why the hell
) did you manage it?It did take some courage to jump in, do 10 lengths but the best bit was going to sit in the jacuzzi afterwards which, after being half frozen to death, felt hotter than the sun.

I'm assuming they're heated though? This looked like the local Lido.
Don't think it is - if it's the serpentine lot. Not that mental if you do it every day - your body gets used to it. Same way channel swimmers can do it without a wetsuit, your body adapts to dealing with the cold.ironictwist said:

It's 1C in Central Florida
My outside pool water is at 26C. The Spa/Jacuzzi is at 31C
Swimming? No problem. Nice glass of Taittinger with the wife in the spa? No problem.

God im jealous!
(As a safety mechanism you cannot turn off the pool heater. It automatically clicks on when the water temp drops to 10 degrees above freezing. It keeps the pipes from freezing and being damaged. Wife and I said sod it. If it's going to come on anyway, we'll just enjoy it. Electric heat - not propane/gas. Didn't want a huge bomb (propane tank) outside the house. No gas lines in most of Florida)
when I was 16 I (+ some friends) went swinnimg in the north sea on boxing day, Raised about £100 for charity.
It was so cold on the day that there was ice on the promanade, ran down the beech in trunks only. By the time we got to the water it felt quite warm.
I dont think I could do it now.

I used to crew and lifesave for long distance outdoor swimmers. In very cold temps, the longest in terms of time was Windermere, took the poor girl 7.5 hours. Ever tried rowing a boat for 7.5 hours? Hurts! Not half as much as they did though!
The body adjusts. We would 'open' the harbour in April and my god in Scotland the water is still very cold at that time. You can actually feel
your body panicking when you first get in, but then you get use to it. It actually feels colder when u get out and the air hits you and your body realises what's going on!
