OK so we are all up to our necks in snow and suffering from cabin fever. Fat from the festive period and never going to drink that much ever again, well maybe not for a few weeks anyway. So I thought I would ask about entering the TVR Challenge. I wanted to build some thing special so here's where I'am now.
Engine - finally arrived from the states, 5.0ltr Ford 302.
Body - From the chaps in Blackpool.
RollCage = from Roll centre and has now been welded on to the chassis.
Trying to find a dash to fit in to the car, all electrical work to do, make and weld and exhaust, Start car and smile.

From the front

From the back

1977 Ford 302

So Gents what do you say......?
Can I come and race with you guys this year?

Hi, looking good.

Tim Lamont (act) has just done some carbon Tuscan Dashboards that may fit.

You'd be more than welcome to come and play, and it would be fantastic to see the 5000m on track with the rest of the varied TVR's we have.

You'd be looking at class A or maybe B depending on the power to weight figures. what sort of power and weight are looking at

Cheers

G

p.s. got any pics of the cage in place. im still working on which way to go with mine.

I'm sure it will be straight forward getting an entry for the car as JR needs cars on the grid, and it looks like it will be nice when finished, but a nice what?

Is it a special that has been made to look like a TVR, or is it a 3000M body and chassis with a V8 fitted (I suspect I already know the answer). There's already a 3 page thread on when is a TVR not a TVR on here. wink

If it is in the same vein as PRWs "5000M" which it looks very much like it, what class should it run in? Well the regs are actually quite clear in this regard.... "cough" The challenge is for cars built by TVR Engineering Ltd (and I assume that means originally built by) and then its straight forward - its down to PTW.

If it is a PRW type special, as it does not fit in with the above clasue in the current regs, it should sit in the invitaional class. BUT I'm sure JR will say it's his seres and he will put it where he decides (probably A or B)

I would love to see it in the championship and on the grid as it is certainly seems to be in the spirit of the series. The class it runs in however, should be given some thought IMMO smile

It does't need to be that complicated Voodoo!! Your car is a car built in the original factory in Blackpool or from TVR Bits by Ex TVR Lads in fact in a very similar way to how cars were built right through various times in the 60's when the company went bump 3 times before now!

Regs are simple, There aren't many and 3 power to weight classes exist. Your car will be in Class A looking at that dual quad and Ally airflow research? headed engine which will be giving near to 425hp.

Bout time we got some more new earlier looking cars on the grid.

(cue john taking the piss) hehe

Regs are simple Neil, and as you say there aren't many, but to the letter of the Regs its not a Class A or B car, it wasnt built by TVR Engineering, and has very few TVR bits.

As JR explained it to me...

A TVR Based Chassis
A TVR used engine
A TVR Based Body

Thats it. Which TVR Company is not specified.
Bodies taken from moulds are Ok.
GTFs are allowed with Chassis built "in the style of" a Tussie. Same with some mods.
The V8 Tasmin Tuscan was OK.
The V6 twin Turbo was OK.
So long as its easily recognisable as a TVR...
My guess is straight into A. PTW.

I'm not saying right or wrongs here, more cars on the Grid and all.
There's a new A Tuscan out next year thats a bitsa car. That'll be in A no probs.

Welcome aboard...looks like another stunning race car. They'll ( frown ) be lucky to have you!

I'm not saying right or wrongs either Andy, but JR needs to update the regs to refelect what is acceptable otherwise the regs really are worthless.

The latest regs state clearly that the car should have been built by TVR Engineering Ltd, not some blokes that used to work for that factory and now rent space in the factory building all kinds of things (very well it seems too).

Taken from mould, yes it was, but not from a TVR mould one suspects.

Engine was never used by TVR, conversions for the 5000M were done in Canada, nor for that matter have TVR ever used LS power...

A new Tuscan thats a bitsa is just what it is, but I suspect its DNA very close to an original Tuscan racer. The car in question, I beleive has DNA one step away from a one-off commission.

If the series was better subscribed, then the car would happily sit in an invitiation class with the GTFs as that's probably where they should be.

What is not in question is that it certainly does looks like another stunning race car as you say, and it will be welcome by all I think...

The only thing that is special about this car is that I've stripped it down and rebuilt it myself. It's my old challenge chassis rebodied, JR will surly remember that I did try to buy a floor pan from him for this car in the summer, he was too busy that day. I've now laid up a floor pan in the car and spent days pulling fiberglass from my skin. As a total newbie to this fiberglassing stuff then I found myself cutting bits out when it came to welding in the roll cage. The engine, I sold my engine to someone who is fitting it in to another Challenge car. Therefore, as I didn't want to source and fit an AJP I went for a period Ford 302....why... I just don't know, it's what I felt was right for the body that I was fitting. So to sum it up, It is a TVR(this will be my 13.5th). The body was laid up by Simon Billington at 'Space Composites' in Elswick, they did Peter Wheelers.
The engine was built to my spec by ProformanceUnlimited.com. These guys did a great job, I found it cheaper to get them to build it and send it over than it was to have someone build this engine in the UK.
The rollcage I had sent to me by Rollcentre. They supplied one to fit a Tuscan Challenge car. With a little bit of head scratching and a roll of duck tape, assembled it on the garage floor, found where all the tubes go, then fitted and welded it in to the car.
So TVR? Most definetly yes.!.... Special....? To me, very much so.
TVR NUTTER, Car Racer and enthusiast? I am that!

How the car looked many years back.

No dig intended JS, and I get where you're coming from, but a single make series it is no longer. But the GTFs, Thorpedo, T350R etc are all bitsa cars and have raced successfully making the racing more interesting for punters and racers alike.

Graham and many others run Tuscan panels taken from secondary moulds etc as do GTFs and there's already a Chevy Tuscan out, GT Tuscans...guess it's now going to be difficult to legislate on.

I'd guess that as more of these cars seem to turn up that the "Invitation Class" may come into being properly, but first you need 5 regular runners or Invitation will win the Series regardless.

The published regs contain a number of errors, and in some cases are contradictory and dont make sense,Something I hope to tidy up with JR asap. It doesnt help when the regs, the brscc web site, john's site, the challenge site ( last updated mid 2009 !!!!) and the tvrcc site all have slightly different regs..

In my opinion Voodoo's car is certainly within the spirit of the regs ( if it was good enough for PW is good enough for the rest of us!!!) and I'd love to see it coming out to play

Didn't take it as dig Andy, all valid points well made. smile

Fortunately it doesn't matter what I think or the invitation class would be the biggest class in the series hehe

For the guys who have watched my version of this video you will see that he gets the'TVR' part right this time, Not RVT.

Thats not a good sign when someone doesn't recognise it is a TVR...maybe JR should get the elegibility scrutineers for the series to give it a look over? hehe

Will the finished article be painted blue and white by any chance Brian? wink

"Blue and white by any chance".... What ever makes you think that? I'm actually going for a moss green.. little bit more 'British'looking don't you think old chap?

But I'am open, went to the paint shop and there are quite a few colours, took me 2hrs to decide the green I liked. I saw this green on one of the Tuscan Racers, but, I think it was the one that went on fire?

So blue and white.....Naw.. thats just too obvious.

Here you go - lucky green!

also in relation to the website as mentioned earlier, as im not about much this year someone will need to stay in touch with the web guy. I did try to keep things moving last year, however in the end I just felt like I was banging my head off a brick wall. If someone emails me I can send you his contact details. I know that Nick was keen to look after it but didnt receive the log in details he needed. I would hope that someone can pick the baton up on this as the majority of the work is complete now, it just needs updating for the new season. It would be a shame if it didnt get utilised.
