How good is your 4x4 in the snow?

So, in the opinion of PHers, which is the best 4x4 for these conditions? Be honest.

Since my GTO is permanent AWD, I'll start:

On ice 2/10
On snow 6/10, though I haven't tried any really steep roads
In snow 0/10, 7cm ground clearance means it's OK as a small snow plough, though.

Wife's Octavia 4x4 estate:

On ice - 1/10 stopping; 5/10 getting going compared to FWD.
On/in snow 8/10 - been on some really steep untreated roads in 8" snow, no problems on normal tyres.

Ground clearance is good as it's about 1.5" higher than a normal Octy estate.

With winter tyres it would be 10/10 for snow. Biggest problem is descending steep hills - even in 1st gear with no feet on the pedals at 5-10mph it will slide.

Oriental LC. Snow is merely a warm up for sand dunes. 11/10. In fact, so good, I've developed that curious Hammondesque itch for a classic Landie. V8, of course.

RRS excellent for most stuff.

Brakes almost as vulnerable as any other car if you lose traction.

P38 4.6 Range Rover with General Grabber AT2's. Superb in the snow and ice. I havent had the TC or ABS kick in at all.

Cant beat them. Ram is good as well. But completely the wrong tyres on this one.....



My old Ram had the right tyres and went everywhere......

I haven't found them to be a problem at all in the recent weather as I've been going slowly enough and leaving plenty of room for braking. When braking hard in the dry they do seem more prone to locking up than discs though so I'm looking into disc brake conversions at the moment as a job for the summer!

What is it like steering the likes of a Freelander on ice then? And compacted snow? I assume driving over fluffy snow is no problem.

And braking is just as bad as doing it in a shopping car?
