Dear all, I have stumbled upon a problem.

Atop my lack of love and patience for Flickr, I am aware that converting to JPEG has detrimental effects on IQ. So, I've been suggested to convert my pics to TIFF.

Now, my RAW files are circa 10mb each, but my TIFF files are between 50 and 60!!

My image resizer doesn't seem to do anything to them, maybe it only works raw-jpeg.

Now, to get these snaps on to flickr, I have some work to do. Any suggestions, learned friends?

Wouldnt worry about it. The only way you've got complete control of IQ is a print, online you're reliant on monitor size, resolution, calibration etc

Flickr will take gifs and bitmaps, but there's not so much need to do hi-res for web and jpeg is usually fine. I usually resize to either 600 or 800 on longest side and have quality set to 10 or above, image sizes vary from 100-300k max

Sorry to sound a bit dumb here, but what problems are you experiencing?

There's nothing wrong with a file saved as a jpeg - we print everything from A5 to the largest images that were originally saved as Tiffs and then converted to jpeg. Our advise to our clients when supplying artwork is to convert Tiffs to jpegs and save with maximum compression. You won't loose any noticable quality (certainly not for general 'photo quality' printing), and as you are now also aware, a huge Tiff can become a reasonable sized jpeg (or vice-versa).

True, but not too apparent in a single save at the end of the process. What really bv&&3rs a file is continuous saving and resaving if you work on a compressed file like a JPEG in Photoshop.

Store or work with TIFF or PSD and just do your final output in JPEG - use something like "Save for Web" and you can have full control over dimensions, file size and compression.

Tiff are uncompressed full sized files, no way are you going to be able to upload them and no one will want to download them.

Save them as jpg for web, sRGB colour space, 95% quality or so resized to 1000px or whatever. Or use png if you dont like jpg.

I'm going to be lateral and ask if you have actually noticed a problem yourself, or just read about it in a magazine, review etc. This would seem to be the root of the issue smile

The mags have a lot to answer for wrt image quality etc.

If it looks good -- it is good.

A picture taken at 1600 ISO will look fairly grainy at 100% (taken on my D70s) - printed out at a manageable size - the grain is barely visible

Exactly - A friend takes a lot of pictures for various classic car comics - his kit is elderly, he has two lenses and he has no idea what a RAW file is.

He does however, take well-composed, well thought-out pictures that people pay good money to see.

Hammers, heads and nails, Sir.

Now, I haven't noticed anything on my snaps, I've just seen back to back comparisons, no doubt using fairly extreme examples. As a newcomer to this brilliant hobby, I suspect I'm an easy target for advice!

Thanks all, back to the converter...

Converting to TIFF is lunacy if you are keeping the original RAW. Just convert to jpeg for web use and any standard printing.

If you are printing absolutely massive then maybe consider going TIFF but I personally wouldn't bother even then.

Damn I'm good biggrin I guessed you'd fallen victim to those obsessive Mac types who mince about in suede shoes and bang on about how JPG is a lossy format yada yada... well it is, but...

It's only a problem if you've found it. I would need oxygen above 10,000 feet, but I'm at sea level.

I remember when I came on here because I thought "prime" lenses meant they were really good, asking which prime zoom lens should I buy.

www.smugmug.com upload up to 600mb RAW files, not used this function myself but the right account allows this. Never undertsood the big fuss about Flickr, I think its pants compared to smugmug.

I have to agree with you. I'm not big fan of it either, but I've been putting it down to my newbie-ineptitude. I hate the interface on Flickr.

It should be noted that not all jpgs are the same. A decent image editor will allow you to choose your compression level, and thus filesize.

Original image resized to 640x480 and saved at 100% compression in IrfanView (250kb)...

...and the same image saved at 60% compression just to make the point (53kb)...
