Hello

Following on from a previous post (See Below) some styling concepts have been developed to show some design intentions for a new Kit Car Headlamp.

http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The lamp is intended as a generic unit which can be used on any car build where headlamps are not incorporated.

Please comment with your opinions of the designs. All comments and criticisms are welcome, both positive and negative. If there are elements of different concepts you would like to see combined this also is helpful to know.

This is an image of all the concepts and the link below is a gallery with plenty more images.

Thank you for viewing this post and I look forward to reading all feedback.

HID lights are becoming the norm for new cars and many kit builders would like to go the same way.
If you were able to offer an HID unit then I think styling may become of secondary importance.

To comply the lights must be self levelling and include a washer system.

LED headlights have made their way onto the top of the range Audis, so I don't think it will be too long before they get to more everyday cars, and headlight components. I do mean the whole headlights here, not just the strip of daylight running lights they have had for a while.

maybe its just me that sees this, but to me that would be awesome if the silver bits were like eye lids which opened when you turned the lights on. and you could have some kind of brush inside the eye lids to clean the lens

is it just me? ok ill return to the loony house now

I think A would be best. I would like to see a LED DRL Lamp for a kit-car to "keep up with the Jones'" as it were. Having new technologies available for Kit Cars especially that will meet probable new legislation can only be a good thing.

Hi

Thanks for all the feedback. It is all very much appreciated. I have added an additional concept to the mix so any more opinions on this will be very helpful.

The new one is the one in the middle. This concept covers all functions including Led DI/DRL and Bi-Halogen projector. It would however work out to be the most expensive.

More images can be seen at:

Please let me know what you think of this or any of the other concepts.

Thanks, Mike

the CREE P7 LED emits the equivalent of a 40w halogen bulb (give or take a bit, around 950 lumens). Manufacturers are generaly limited by how much heat they can remove, a bit like computer processors, you can overdrive an LED too if the cooling is sufficient.

The problem (IMO) is that LED's are very small compared to traditional lights (I could build a car headlight into something the size of a 2xAA mag light lense). Which makes them very dazzling to on coming trafic. Which is why I fekin hate those Audi DRL's

Self levelling?? confused

Does that mean they need to auto adjust their angle if you load the car up with gear??

Yup, the lights optics move around to keep the beam down at the right angle, for when you go over speed bumps, or you're carrying a body in the boot hehe .

Hmm, I'd think they would flicker all over the place if they are on some sort of balance weighted pivot.
