Just preparing a new thread for when the thaw causes a flood.

Does seem to be rather a lot of frozen water lying about.

But it will be a gradual thaw.

More risk of all the ancient water mains rupturing after such a long period of cold.

I was taught that 8" of snow is the equivalent of 1" of rain, based on that there should be no problems with flooding unless drains have cracked due to freezing.

I thought the ratio was 1:5 rather than 8.

All the grit won't help as it's not quick to dissolve so when it rains all the local drains will flood

The thaw here in Reading is very gradual - sadly I don't think flooding is on the cards...

That doesn't count, York floods whenever there is a light drizzle in the dales.

Gleaned from 'tinternet

"The calculated data is based on information from the National Weather Service that indicates the average snowfall is in a ratio of 10 inches of snow to 1 inch of equivalent rainfall. More densely packed and wet snow is in the ratio of 8 inches of snow to 1 inch of equivalent rainfall, and more powdery snow is about 14 to 1 ratio. Obviously this is an approximation but a good one. The NWS uses calculations each year in specific areas where the density ratio may be slightly different, to approximate how much water will be returned to the natural rivers, lakes, ponds, catch basins, waterways and underground streams for many different uses in later times of need. It can also be used in the calculation of how much water should be or could be released from dams for irrigation at a specific time.

It is not important what the unit of measure is, inches, feet or metric values. The ratio remains the same. "

I'm asured by the MET Office that due to MMGW there will be no floods because this is a very mild winter and the latest cold weather did not actually happen spin
