Hi after recent help from a PH'er clap i have been pointed in the direction of lenses with a zoom range including 255mm to match my binoculars.

Having a quick look on Jessops i have found a very cheap contender http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/66320...

Does anybody have any thoughts or experience with this lense. I have a 50 pound voucher for jessops so this becomes very cheap.

I don't want to buy something and wish that i had held out for something better. This lense would be used for garden wildlife and genaral photography whilst out on walks. I do not have a tripod so i would want a decent image from hand.

Comment please!

Well for £49 you can't really go wrong can you. That's cheaper than a decent filter!

As for wishing you had held on for something better... well there are many MUCH better lenses out there... you just have to decide how much you want to spend. But it's the right focal length for wildlife - with your sensor you'll effectively get up to 450mm with that lens.

This taken from about 30 feet with a 70-300 with a similar 'crop' sensor

BTW it's Lens (not lense) Unless you are a yank of course. (and what do they know!).

Have a look at the reviews on the net.
I was put off buying this lens and went for a canon IS instead.

I too went for a Canon (EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS). I have to say i have been very pleased with it on my 500D, in particular with the IS. To an amateur like myself it appears to produce a far better image than the kit lens (18-55) that came with the camera. However at 49 quid that Tamron does look attractive.

I'd say go for it. I got the same lens with my 400D a few years ago for £99 and haven't regretted it.

Negatives are it's relatively slow focus and I noticed quite a bit of CA.

Thanks for all the advice and samples. I must admit i did have second thoughts when i read the reviews re softness past 200mm, and aborations on edges with high contrast compositions but for the money this has no competitors.

I am picking this up tomorrow. I might even put up some test shots in the next few days.

Thanks again.
