whirring noise...
Discussion
Hi,
my Citroen Ax makes an odd whirring noise when being driven at around 60-70mph on the motorway, it can be heard above the radio but it isn't loud, I suspect it is the tone which gets noticed.
Recently:
new fan belt fitted - this decided to retire when I was driving up the motorway one night, no warning just a noise as it escaped under the car followed by the charge light coming on. No problem with the alternator or either pulley.
new timing belt - engine covered 116000 miles so time for a change. Followed procedure in Haynes manual including making tool to set tension of tensioner pulley. Tensioner pulley and water pump checked - no end float, wobble or stiffness and no leaks from by water pump.
Removed covers today to re-check belt tension - no sign of rubbing inside covers, belt tension re-set and can twist it through 90° on the "tight" or driving run between cam pulley and crank pulley.
I am starting to wonder whether the whirr is a wheel bearing, it isn't the heater fan. All work done in a cool garage...
Any suggestions chaps?
I rely on this car for my 90 mile commute and if it dies now I guess I have missed the £2k trade in :-( plus cost of recovery from the motorway.

Hi annodomini,
I haven't heard it when the car was stationary BUT that doesn't mean it doesn't.
It seemed to be engine-speed dependent BUT the noise only appeared after about 45 minutes of driving. I have just checked the front wheel bearings and they seem OK.
I will be making another test run / commute in it in the morning so I will be listening carefully for noises...more news on this story later...
thank you for the interest...

It could be something obscure like a tube or something fluttering/vibrating due to the speed of the wind passing through the engine bay...
I'd suggest making sure everything like that cables/wires/tubes are all securely fastened.
I don't suppose you've changed any bodywork recently have you?
