What sort of trim are you after?

If you are going for just the leather dash and some carpet then it really is not that difficult to do.

Full Alcontara throughout, different colour stitching, embroidery within the seats, diamond stitching on the bulk head, full carpets, alcontara over all ally panels, steering wheel, roll bars, etc.

Too much for me im afraid, ive seen a few done but it seems to be scarring most trimmers off.

Doesn't Alcontara fade and show wear quite quickly?

I would have thought it was a bit thin over the ally unless you are going to add padding first!

There are some felt-type floor coverings Mark which might be suitable for the side/kick panels. I think you need something reasonably thick to hide the rivet heads. A thin covering may look great in the short-term but would probably sink/shrink to show everything underneath after a month or two of temp change.
Look at industrial floor coverings. Had some offices/ corridors done in it a few years back, its bonded down with impact adhesive, feels quite soft and high quality but is only relatively thin (4-5mm) with a stiff backing. Remember thinking at the time would be great for kit-trimming.

I don't think either leather or Alcontara is good for the ali panels. As said, it is too thin unless you are going to start with some sort of padding.
There are some very nice carpet types available for kitcar trimming which have short, dense and very fine pile. Worth checking out the kit trim suppliers and having samples sent out.

The trim specialists are right to be reticent about this job as every join will need to be sewn and straight which is not easy.
Carpet on the other hand will only need to be bound where it meets another surface or edge such as the door opening. Any other joints just need to be cut carefully so that the pile hides the join.

hi guys i'm not sure if i'm aloud to write this as its probly advertising but i trim ultima's and there is never any trouble,just think trimmers are scared of them some how..i dont mind if you ring me for advise on how to do it yourself if you want

We did my GTR with a carpet product called imported wool square weave carpet. This product was used in early PORSCHE cars it has no knapp at all is very easy to keep clean. The other thing we did was held the carpet off the rivets about 1/2 inch on both sides. This gives the car a little more "race car" than "cruiser look". The car is yellow so the carpet is edge bound in yellow leather. The carpet itelf is woven with both gray and black colors in the carpet. This same product is available in a mixed blue or red. don't you dare posting this pic here still a miracle to me how anybody can ever part with an ultima he has built apart from building another one.....at least you have now a decent gear box in case you write it off.......then you can use it for your next ultima

Well you are asking for opinions.

Here is mine :-

I don't think it is right that you are asking people to comment on the price on the forum - how do you think the guy who has been good enough to give you the quote will feel ?(and we know he reads the forum)

None of us are experts in trimming so we can't possibly know how much the materials cost, or how many hours of work it will take and we certainly don't know what his hourly rates are.

Surely this is private business between you and the trimmer.

That's my opinion.

When i qoute my customers many people turn around and quote the prices i gave to someone else thats business, buyers and sellers. the buyers want the cheapest prices, the sellers want to make the most. If a trimmer can make lots of money then good for them, but in this instance i am a buyer and want the best quality for the cheapest price.

Ah....whatever.

In an Ult. The dash is best in leather. The floor in carpet. The sides in carpet upto the sils. The sils I don't have a judgement about. Covered, yes. But Leather or carpet is your favour. I would not put leather anywhere near a moving covered limb...ie foot, and err...foot.

The bulkhead is something you don't want to draw attn to. Versace-o-philes might like a quilted rear. But (again IMHO) less is more. The exposed raw rollcage is great, and behind it should just blend into the roof....a-justa-lika-mina!!

Looking at this photo the first thing that struck me was, 'My God Pete, how many Porker badges do you need to remind you youve got a Porsche???'steering wheel, gear knob, speedo, rev counter, key, key ring???

And I still think that with a leather dash, a roll of Woolies' carpet and a bit of thought, some good switches etc, you can come up wiv a better dash than we have.

Very difficult in my opinion to gauge what's a fair price or not.
What grade leather will be used?
Is the trim to be fitted with body fitted to the car, much easier if final fit hasn't been done.
Will the car be at the trimmers premises with all his tools available?

Do you have a break down of labour costs?
As a lot of us know, its not fun working upside down in the cockpit.

Im sure you are already looking into but if you think the quote is expensive then you need a couple more. Usually a couple of ads in the kit car mags for trimmers, have you posted on the kit car forum, there are some VERY pretty Cobras out there.

From experience:

Alcontara - do it yourself (it's quite forgiving to work with and conforms well to odd curves)
Leather - get a trimmer to do it unless you have a lot of patience! Needs to be nice and warm too.
