Thinking of a Wedge :-) .. a few questions
Discussion
Having recently sold my Chimaera 450 and deciding that my 3000S (which I plan to sell) doesn't really have the performance I'd like, I've seen a nice red (1987) 390SE which I quite fancy. Good performance, good price and somewhat more comfortable than my 3000S.
There are a couple of questions though I be most grateful for comments ...
Q1. Is the steering rack 'standard', or at least easy to refurbish. I noticed it was leaking from somewhere around the end of the column/top of the rack. Is it expensive to refurbish ?
Q2. The diff is also weeping slightly where the propshaft enters ? Again, is this likely to be expensive as/when it needs refurbishing ?
Q3. The gearbox/gear change seems to 'click', from just below the gear lever when changing into 4th ? Is it an 'engine-out' scenario to work on the gearbox ?
Q4. What should the tickover RPM be ? This one was around 1100 rpm at idle (according to the rev counter, mind you), which I consider to be a little on the fast side ? It did sound faster than my other cars (~850 rpm).
I'm not too worried, as both my other TVR's have had little dribbles and niggles here and there, but it's always good to have an idea of what one's getting into.
TIA

3. It's probably not a geabox fault. The rubber bushes that support the gearshift extension from the rear face of the 'box perish, causing so much movement that when you pull the stick back for 4th (and usually 2nd as well) the propshaft flange bolts clout the gearshift extension, causing the regular clicking you could hear.
Set of new bushes usually sorts it and can be done with the box in-situ.
Of course it COULD be something else... but the simple test is to grasp the gearstick with the box in neutral and see if you can lift it up and down. If it moves more than a couple of millimetres, the bushes are shot.
The bushes provided anti-vibration damping for the days when that 'box was used in an 'executive' car. You could replace them with steel rings for all the difference it'd make in a TVR

Just out of interest...why did you sell the Chimp 450?
