so how do you drive one of these then?
Discussion
So my newly aquired series 2a land rover is going in for a new clutch master cylinder this week. While its in, it would be nice to get to know how to drive the beast!
As I'm completely ignorant to how it all works, could any of you guys give a brief explanation about the gears.
I'm ok up and down the box, even with no synchromesh on 1st & 2nd. But slightly unsure about diff lock and 4wd. When the red lever is forward toward the bulkhead, am I in 2 or 4 wheel drive? I believe the yellow knob needs pushing down hard to select diff lock. Will this only lock down in 4wd? If so, that'll explain which direction the red lever goes for 4wd.
Any explanation as to when to use the different gears and confirmation of lever positions will be greatly appreciated.
I've also been lead to believe that converting the front hubs to free wheel is a good thing. Surely I then would have a 2 wd Landy permanently? Whats the point of that?

Thanks for that. The fella I bought it from clearly didn't know how it worked either!
So to re cap> If I push red forward only, I'm in 2wd. Push down the yellow and I'm in 4wd. Low range is best used for what purpose?
I might just book up a day learning off road in the Spring!
The red lever will be forward anyway in 2WD. Push the yellow lever down to engage 4x4.Pull the red lever back to engage low range. Pushing the red lever forward will disengage 4x4(The yellow lever will pop up)and the low range will be disengaged. Low range is lower geared for situations where you need extra traction. Or ideal for towing a heavy load to get you moving. So to re cap> If I push red forward only, I'm in 2wd. Push down the yellow and I'm in 4wd. Low range is best used for what purpose?

As said push down the yellow know for 4 wheel drive in high range, Handy in this icey weeather. pull the red leaver back and then forward to disengae 4 wheel drive. The red lever puts it into low range but aslo engages 4 wheel drive as you cannot have low range 2wd. Freewhell hubs disconet the front halfshaft and propshaft from the wheels when running 2 wheel drive it meaning slightly less mechanical drag you twist a switch on the hub to lock it to the half shaft before using 4 wheel drive. They do mean tyou have to get out when you need to engage 4 wheel drive but if i know i'm going to need 4wd i'll twist them before i leave and run them locked all day. If your landy has them fitted use them if it doesnt i really wouldnt worry about not having them
