Ok, so I've booked a few days away in Berlin with the gf in February and now i'm looking for suggestions of places to visit, eat, avoid, try...

Anyone know how to get to the city centre from the airport? That kinda thing...

Thanks!

Go for a meal/cup of tea up the TV tower, that was ace, try and get up there 20 minutes before dusk, we then had cake and tea while the sun set....Was really good, MUCH better and cheaper than the Millennium Wheel in the U.K, esp as Berlin is quite flat.

Checkpoint Charlie is good

There is a good section of the wall still up by the river with some ace graffiti

Potsdamer Place (excuse spelling) is great.

Public transport is very good, the thing that surprised me was there are no barriers on the underground, so you could if you were naughty travel easily for free!! Some of the Eastern stations had a few un-desirables (I sound like my mother) hanging about but felt a very safe city..

I stayed on a youth hostel which was a boat moored on the river, was really nice and cheap

Interesting city, like a metaphor for Germany as a whole, the Eastern side still seems "old school" and quite derelict in places, while the Westerns Side is very modern...

Checkpoint Charlie isn't worth visiting.

It's just an over-priced, shabby museum 'near' the location of the actual place and in an entirely different context now the wall has gone.

brownie points from your missus could be gained by taking her to the zoo, my wife likes it as they have pandas (seriously have been there 3 times just to see the damn thing).
there is a restuarant that serves up zebra, struggling to find it via google, but if your interested i can search harder.
west side gallery (large portion of the wall intact) is worth seeing but not all the graffitti is from those times.
think its date dependant but at night some of the buildings are lit up in unusual ways.
for the petrolhead there is the bentley garage which also has a veyron, plus a ferrari garage/store.

found it capetown-restaurant.com

Also for the petrol-heads, head to the remains of the "Avus" circuit. It is near the "Messe Sud" S-Bhan station in the west. Grandstands and bariers still standing, and the old commentry box/circular-thing is now a truck-stop.

Please do not bother with Checkpoint Charlie, it is awful!

If you like food there are lots if great places to eat. Prenzlauer Berg offers lots of odd-ball, trendy and fairly cheap restaurants.

+1 for the TV tower, you can sip cocktals and watch the sun-set, very cool.

Just enjoy the place, and dont expect to "see" it all in a few days.

The whole areea around Unter den Linden, the Gendarmenmarkt is a must, packed with history.

Have lunch at Lutter & Wegner on the Gendarmenmarkt.

The Holocaust Monument is surprising.

Alexandre Platz - TV Tower.
Potsdamer Platz.
Brandenburg Gate.
The Reichstag, which is just round the corner from the Brandenburg gate. (You will recognize it if you played Call Of Duty:WaW :P)
Olympic stadium. Where Hertha Berlin play. Magnificent atmosphere, although they're not doing great at the moment.

The underground is really efficient, it does cost although there's no barriers to go through or anyone who checks tickets but it is really efficient.

Had a 4 day trip at the end of summer with a few mates, amazing place. The underground is really good for getting around hassle free. Oh and if your not scared of heights go on the Berlin air service High-Flyer balloon, Amazing views: http://www.air-service-berlin.de/index.php5?page=1...

I wouldn't be so sure. When I was there, twice 2 plained clothed blokes got on and went through the train fining non ticket holders €60 or so.

As for Berlin itself. Simply sublime. I would go back tomorrow if I could. I recommend the holocaust memorial (by the Reichstag and Brandenburg Tor) as well as all the usual sights. Kreuzberg is a good place to walk around if you and your girl like walking around artsy, 'edgy', shoreditch-esque places.

Absolutely. In fact, the Revenue Inspectors I've seen have not only been plain-clothed, but were positively scruffy. No way you'd see them coming.

Why would you not pay anyway? It's far cheaper than anywhere in the UK and a far better system/network. The only reason there are barriers in the UK is because the value for money is so bad people used to be "encouraged" not to pay - using the stick rather than the carrot.

I wouldn't say its far cheaper. Its about £6 for a day pass when I was there in Nov.

However, the system is far superior to anything we have in the uk. Everything just works, its all included on the same ticket and you can get anywhere you want with ease.
