If it is the pilot had some real balls to hope that it would flip over.

Though looking again it did appear to spin the nozzle and accelerate rather quickly.

Looks to linear especially how it pivots on axis – what game is it?

Although it shows neither the take off or the landing. Just some flight with the wheels down and the fan doors open.

Is that all they released?

All it states is that STOVL mode was engaged, i.e. lift fan and engine nozzle control, not that a landing was made in that mode. I imagine they'll work up to a vertical landing, but will want to test the system in safer flight regimes first (not close to the ground!).

Ignoring the CG clip, the harrier is hardly the simplest of aircraft.

I've never thought much of it to be honest. It was designed as a SVTOL aircraft, first flew 3 years ago and still not actually done a short take off and vertical landing in one flight?

It was supposed to be in service in 2012 with the USMC.

The first STOVL variant (BF1) first flew part way through last year, not 3 years ago. That's the same aircraft as in the video and is scheduled to make it's first vertical landing within the next few weeks as far as I'm aware.

ETA that the USMC is to be the first to get F35s in 2012.

Not really, it has deficiencies in it's flight control system (eg dual hyd systems but single control wire that runs from bottom of joystick in an epic run past fuel tanks and engine to horiz stab actuator) that would stop it from being designed today, BUT the nozzle actuation and puffer supplies are basic mechanically controlled systems.
With the GR5 update the flight control system was significantly improved simplifying the Harriers Achilles heel of transition from engine to wing bourne controlled flight.
It STILL is an example, perhaps the last, of engineering determination (sheer bloody mindedness) to overcome the insurmountable.

And it is British. Well lets not get too bogged down in the patents side of things smile

R-R makes the F-35 lift fan biggrin so it's part British.

Before it gets binned, tell us what % of the total order will have these "fans" fitted?
