Santa brought me a Cycleops Magneto turbo trainer for Christmas. I have being easing myself into it as I've not ridden for a few months.

Last week it was 15 mins a day during the week, rest at the weekend. This week I'm trying for 30 mins a day. I'm still yet to setup my speedo as it wont stretch (might just order a new wireless and candense one).

I tend to go flat out for a very short burst (a minute!) then slow down for 30 seconds. Go to a higher gear and burn for a minute again. Towards the end I'll go flat out for a longer time.

Are there any tips out there? I hope to be doing up to 1/hour a day during the week by the end of the month. Trying to burn some weight and get ready for the summer.

Lay a towel over your frame, sweat is a bugger with the paint....and they do make you sweat!!

I've got the Tacx VR, it's been fun cycling round a sunny california whilst there is snow outside.

£30 will get you a computer with cadence and rear wheel speed measurement - makes it so much easier to quantify how hard you're working.

I quite like the cheesiness of the Spervals DVDs, but they are a bit Marmite.

Thanks for the advise guys.

The trainer is in the garage, and I don't have a spare TV or a laptop, so it may be hard with the DVD's. I suppose I could steal the timing and use a clock/bike computer.

I done 32 minutes yesterday, as before, a minute flat out in 1-8, then slow in 1-4 for 30 secs. a minute in 2-5 then slow for 30 seconds. I'm not sure if its right, but is sure makes me sweat and raises the heart rate!

I'm not so worried about the bike paint, its about 7 years old now and my 'spare'.

Try to keep the sweat out of the headset - it won't hurt the paint.

A Heart rate monitor is far more use than a cycle computer - decathlon do a HRM with zones for about £25 and even includes a handlebar mount.

Seems like a good idea. I'm mainly doing it to burn fat, so a Kcal burnt might be good. The prep for summer is a bonus of it.
