The following report in the NY Times reminded me that, on several occasions, I have lost my wallet, (twice in a taxi), to find that the cabbie went considerably out of his way to return it,and refused any reward. I have certainly been ripped of on occasion, but it is gratifying that there are a lot of honest people around. Being klutzily challenged, I even lost my wallet in the Grand Canyon and had it returned.

NYT:PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (AP) -- A New York City cab driver is being praised for returning over $21,000 lost by a visitor from Italy.

Felicia Lettieri, who's 72, left her purse in a Manhattan taxi on Christmas Eve. It contained traveling money for her and six relatives.

Police told them not to get their hopes up about finding it.

The cabbie drove about 50 miles, to a Long Island address he'd found in the purse. No one was home, so he left his phone number, and later returned with the money.

Lettieri's daughter, Maria Rosaria Falonga, told Newsday from Pompei, Italy that the cabbie also left a note.

He told her: ''Don't worry, Felicia. ... I'll keep it safe.''

The driver, Mukul Asaduzzaman, could not be reached for comment.

He refused a reward.

Went on Holiday in October and got off the transfer bus only to realise I'd left my laptop bag containing laptop, passport, all my cash, and all my bank cards on it eek

Thankfully the driver brought them up to the Hotel for me which was nice, especially as the bloody tts on the Hotel reception wouldn't let me check in without my bleeding passport.

I have left my wallet in various places and it always seem to make it back to me, once it was even posted to me. But that had been made up for by my constant problems with sunglasses, had a set of vintage RayBans nicked from me on my 21st, and it has gone down hill since then with a couple of pairs of Oakleys.

Lost my garage key fob - O/H asked in local little shop when she was in for bread if anybody had handed in a key fob - some very nice chap had ! Must have dropped out my jacket pocket after I'd dug my car out one morning. Might not seem valuable, but there is some nice plonk in my garage along with all my car stuff, so in a way it is valuable - to me anyway !

That's why we moved to the country, us local people look after other local people you see.

My mum once found an earring at a black tie do on the floor.

She then went around every single table (it was a BIG do) to find the owner. eventually she found the owner (who hadn't realised it had gone missing) and she was absolutely overjoyed, and slightly upset all at the same time. she said they were an older, traditional couple.

An hour or so later the gentleman came and tapped my mum ont he shoulder and invited her outside for a quick word. He handed her a small bundle by way of thanks, saying to my mum "you've no idea how precious those earrings are to the both of us, we are eternally grateful". Mum, of course, tried to refuse the bundle (she's that sort of person), but the chap was having none of it.

When he left, still extremely thankful, she unravelled 10 x £50 notes!!!

Always puts a smile on my face that story - good things do happen sometimes in this world and karma will see it right one way or another biggrin

Not lost anything but once found a mobile phone, called the numbers home, no answer then tried the most recent numbers to get an address to send it back to. as it was only local stuck it in an envelope and stuck it through the door.

My brothers had a phone returned to him at a festival, same principal called the numbers to arrange to meet up and give it back. The guy had apparently seen it fall out of his pocket then had to take it from some kids who picked it up and walked the other way. Very nice of him.

Not me, but my brother lost his wallet whilst out clubbing (bloody typical).
Had it returned by post (contained his driving licence) - nice of them. Guess someone handed it in.

I had a bizarre thing with my phone this year, lost it at Duxford taking pictures of planes, didn’t realise till couple of hours later when my friend phoned it and a man replied, made a number of references to me without prompting ie that I was female and taking pictures so he must have seen me drop it.

We asked him to hand it into security and he said after much convincing that he might do but he was leaving now so might not. He never did, thought it was weird if you are going to steal my phone why answer it?

When I got back home I found he had rung over half of the people in my contacts asking for my home address to post it, luckily no one would give it to him but they all went on about what a lovely man was. I miss that phone frown

A £2000 DSLR camera...

...it ended up in the recycling bin and was collected by the rubbish cart! (long story).

Called the recycling company, thinking not a hope in hell! + who ever found it wouldnt even realise just what an expensive bit of it it was.

"Yes sir, its waiting here, one of our sorting staff handed it in yesterday"

...after picking myself up off the floor ".... I'll be down to collect ASAP with a few cases of something tasty for your staff!"

I left my new Ipod on the roof of my car in a leisure centre car park and someone very kindly handed it into the reception and left a note on my car telling me it was there.
Most kind as i didnt even realise i had lost it untill i saw the note.

I haven't personally, but a good friend has lost his wallet whilst ratarsed on no less than 3 separate occasions. Amazingly all three times someone has either handed it into the police, or found a contact number to reach him on.

Slightly different, but another fairly amazing story was my Mum (rather stupidly I might add) flicking some chewing gum out of the back window of the G-wagen while we were driving out of some tolls near Monaco last year, managed to eject a very nice and sentimental ring (a Cartier three ring russian eternity jobbie that Dad had bought her a number of years ago) that was slightly loose. She only realised a few minutes later, and because it was at a busy time and we had used one of the central tolls it could only have landed right in the middle of a melee of merging traffic I refused to go back for it.

They waited 3 or 4 days until it was a Sunday, got up very early and drove from our house back over to the spot where they'd lost to have a look along the hard shoulder, basically so Mum could have closure on it. Unbelievably, they pulled up about 100 yards after the tolls on the hard shoulder, Mum stepped out of the car, and straight away spotted the diamonds on the edge glistening, and found it propped up against the concrete retaining wall about 3 feet away from her, level with the front of the car.

Aside from a tiny scuff presumably from where it had landed, it was completely unharmed. Amazingly it must have rolled all the way from the window, across the very wide merging area, to the side of the road without getting run over.

Couldnt believe it!

First of all for the stupidity of the person that failed to take it out of the recycling bin after I told them it was in there to keep it dry & secondly for it being handed in - undamaged only a day later.

not lost, but topic related by way of 'kindness of strangers'

During the recent white out here in Reading...was watching telly around 8pm when there was a knock at the door..
"Is that your car mate?" says bloke at the door
"yeah...why?"
"I've just hit it....sorry, this idiot in an Audi came round the corner in front of me on his mobile, cut the corner and forced me over...I've grazed the bumper I think...."
"Oh..right..."

Totally shocked he should take the trouble to find me, only just managed to get his details
Damage was minor, thought maybe 2 panels at £60 a panel at paintless dent removal place.
Quote came in at £300 !!
He even asked me how I'd get to work and would I need a hire car???!!
He paid up on the doorstep in cash 3 weeks later... £300
