Hi folks,

I'm new to this forum so my apologies if this has been covered before, I couldn't find it with a quick look. I have a 1998 E39 523i. This week the ignition key has started turning the whole lock mechanism instead of the lock internals. If I rock the steering wheel it will eventually work properly and all is well, until maybe the next time or maybe not. I'm concerned one time it will not work at all and I'll be stuck somewhere. Is this a known problem? If yes can someone tell me the cause please?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Big L,

I have the exact same model / year and have had the same problem.

Gave it a stiff ignoring and it is still working fine with the occasional problem you have described - I bought the car as a 'Snotter' (although it is too good to be classified as that really) so not worth investigating further.

It's part of the anti screwdriver in the barrel theft protection.
Best bet is to get to BMW with your V5 and order a replacement barrel asap, they aren't too expensive, and you insert your key, jab a thin pin down the side of the surround the key fits in (you should see a little dimple) and the barrel comes straight out.

Thanks Junglie & TheEnd,

I'll take a closer look once my drive isn't inches deep in ice.
