I have inherited a 1974 Series III and hope to get it MOT'd soon. Having looked over it the front springs might be a problem and some advice would be appreciated.

If the leaf springs are separating slightly at the ends, do they need replacing or can they be dismantled, cleaned up and reassembled?

Thanks!

Yes they can be stripped, cleaned and regreased with the obvious caution... I have done this with mine and it took about half a day to do the rear springs including re-spraying them. It was a messy job as you will have over 30 years of crud to clean off.

Once rebuilt they gained around 1.5" of ride height and as soon as i get the car finished and back on the road I expect to keep all my teeth fillings intact.

The other options are to replace the springs with similar replacements, although the quality is questionable with some manufacturers, or go for Parabolic springs, again it would appear you will get what you pay for... For standard springs expect to pay £60-£80 per pair, double that, or more, for parabolics per pair depending on manufacturer...

I wanted originality with mine and the springs were original and restorable.

Hope this helps

Thanks Mark, that's good to know, I'll try cleaning them up first then. On the basis that if none of the leaves are cracked or worn thin, they should be ok. I'm hoping that it is just an accumulation of stuff that is pushing the leaves open!
