Some sensational shots there.

I'm never sure whether to be motivated or totally de-motivated when seeing the excellent work of other photographers. I attempt to convince myself that had I been there, I would have done equally well. That way, I stay positive!

Resolution for 2010. Do more photography just for me and start accumulating shots that I can post, with confidence, in "Your 5 Best Shots from 2010"!

I know how you feel, often amazed by some of the shots posted on here or linked too etc. Always wish I was good enough to compete. Would love to log in here and find someone has started a thread praising my photos.

Suppose I should just keep practicing really.

Back on topic, Some of those shots are awe inspiring.

Bear in mind too the kit that many of the photographers are using - not just the huge zoom lenses (or even huge primes) which cost thousands of pounds, but also the associated accessories. Such as helicopters wink All of which help them to capture images like the ones in the link.

That said, practice, practice and more practice will pay off. Thinking about what you're wanting to achieve is also productive, rather than just doing to photographic equivalent of "shoot first, ask questions later...". If you're just snapping away and then reviewing pictures to see what you've ended up with then inevitably you will get lucky and get some good shots. And you may even find you get 'luckier' with the number of shots you're happy with as you practice more. But will you know how to consistently achieve them ? Perhaps, perhaps not.

But thinking about what you want to photograph, and why, *beforehand* can often yield more constructive results. Not necessarily better photographs at first - I've had days where I've set out to capture particular shots and failed - but the up-side is that I now know what to do and what not to do next time.

Getting to know your camera inside out is also a really useful thing to do, so you know immediately what settings to use and how to access them quickly. There's nothing worse than looking through menus for a particular option, or forgetting to change a particular setting back, while the scene you're trying to capture has evaporated from before your eyes.

This is part of the "problem" for me Nick. I do have some great kit (not the helicopter though!), and earn a reasonable proportion of my income through photography. The trouble is that in "doing photography" for clients, I seem to have lost track of what started me off; the pleasure of just going off for the day with a camera and photographing stuff purely for pleasure (and just for me). This is what I must try to recapture.

By brother-in-law competes in speed hill-climb and hopes to have his re-build completed for this season. I'm determined to have a couple of weekends at either Prescott, Shelsley Walsh or Loton Park for some enjoyable motosport photography and also to indulge my passion for wildlife and macro work (both of which I've neglected for years).

Snap! That's what I've said too, I love it when I do it, but am going to make a concerted effort to spend more time taking shots rather than talking about it!

Snap - that's what I intend to do more this year to get out and about rather than just talk about it!

About 30 degrees clockwise gives the effect, made more dramatic by the foreshortening of the other trails. The helicopter and background are clues.

Some outstanding photos there, but I think that if the assembled masses of the PH Photo forum went out to the same spots armed with the same gear they'd get some equally good results.
