... is currently sat, in the form of snow in the UK, waiting to flood most low lying areas?

Any thoughts on exactly (or, more likely, roughly) how many millions of gallons of water are sat as snow across the UK right now?

Crazy mathematical theories welcome, I'm sure it's an impossible question to answer..

Lots x much more / evaporation = end of the world.

Well,

based on the entire surface area of the UK being covered in 25cm of snow (very rough guessed average).

There is currently 61,205,000 litres of snow on the UK.
Not sure how to calculate snow melting to water though.

Approx area of UKm is 245,000km2 therefore assume average snow depth of 2" volume of snow is 245,000x50mm

=.00005x245000 = 12.25cubic Km of Snow

1 cube snow =8% water if fresh therefore 0.98cubic km of water

=1000000000m3 per Km3 =0.98 x1000000000 = 980,000,000 m3 of water

=980,000,000,000 litres of water.

Hope thats useful

The media have already written the scaremongering stories about flooding. Give it a couple of days and they will be published.

It all depends on how quickly it melts, I can't see it being a big problem really.

Which if you want to visualise...

I think would be a cylindrical storage container 300m high, and with a diameter of just over 2000m.

980,000,000,001 Litres of water? bit precise isn't it?

I wanted to correct his calculations to make them more accurate whilst being subtle, didn't want to embarress the poor chaps shortcomings.

Given the lack of a cylinder 300m high and 2000m in diameter, I would guess this melted snow is not going to be stored ready for use in the Summer.
