Okay - have just been chatting (thanks to this thread). She has changed her name since last passport (got divorced) so any idea of such implications?
I assume she'd just have to send in the divorce papers in the same way the mrs just had to send in her marriage cert when she renewed. All she did was send in the old passport, new photo and marriage cert.
She'd had the wrong name on her passport for 10 years as she'd got it for our honeymoon, obviously in her maiden name and never remembered to change it. Every time we travelled, it was "oh, I must get it changed" and she never did. She just booked in her maiden name.

If you need a replacement birth certificate you can order them here:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
In fact you can get one for anybody you like as they are not a form of proof of identity.
However all you need to know about passport renewal is here:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Pas...
You don't need a birth cert.
