BMW Dealers and Sales staff watches!
Discussion
Through the years I've been through a few BMW's and being a watch man have always noticed that the salesman I'm dealing with is wearing a flashy watch..be it a Rolex Submariner, Breitling, Cartier or as the latest one a Hublot Big Bang..
On the other hand - Audi dealership staff seems to be happy with Citizen and Seiko watches most of the time!
Could this be a BMW thing where the staff are subsidised to wear flash watches!?
Real strange as my latest car salesman was a new recruit and said he joined the dealership a month back - it was his first job as a car salesman and he was on training and was being over looked by his manager...the dude had a Submariner on and no it didnt look fake at all.....hmmm makes me wonder as I doubt he could afford a £4k watch himself...

Alot of fakes fly around in the motortrade, but thats not to say his wasn't real. I know alot of motor traders and most have very nice watches on their wrist, some have a few nice pieces they leave in the safe too. (A bit like this site - an interest in cars and watches kind of goes hand in hand with some people).
He may come from a good background (birthday present ?), he may have been very successful in a previous job etc.
In days gone by watches were 'won' as incentives, but not heard of that for years. It does seem that BMW salesmen have to look a certain way to get the job in the first place mind you
.
I have a few nice watches, I wear them all to work (not at the same time) but try not to show them off if possible. I wear them for my pleasure not to be flash.
eta, Never heard of a dealership subsidising staff watches either !!

Well I run a Merc dealership and myself and most of my colleagues are into our watches, we don't have any sort of deal with a watch company....I'm 100% certain this would be the case with every other manufacturer!
I can't see why you think it strange that a car salesperson at a presitge manufacturer could afford to spend £4k on a watch, I would imagine most of them are earning £40k plus.

Wow, this is a bit of an eye opener for me. I can't imagine someone on £40k splashing out £4k on a watch. That's about two months salary after tax. Or maybe four months after tax and bills. Even if he is financing it.And as for a salesman wearing a Hublot Big Bang - it's either a fake, or he's the owner of the dealership or he's a member of the Quandt family. A guy I used to work for wore an AP Royal Oak and he was on about $10m a year, so that sounds about right, but people on more earthly wages would have to be slightly deranged to be buying a watch for the price of a luxury car.

)Well I know they earn circa £40-50k but thats exactly my point! Someone on that kind of money wouldnt spend £4-10k on a watch!
Thus my question on if BMW have something to do with this...they all seem to be wearing flash watches..even the receptionist at my local BMW garage has a Cartier Tank on - i mean come one how many receptionists wear Cartier watches!?

I took my old Boxster in for a service and the chap was wearing a Franck Muller crazy colours. Now the weird thing was that he was about 23 and a workmate of mine knew him - no way it was real AND his.
It looked very much the real thing though, so I wandered if they have watches at the dealership which almost form part of the uniform for staff???

Why wouldn't someone who earns £40-50K spend that kind of money on a nice watch ? As for BMW having something to do with the staff wearing nice watches, well I can say for sure that is simply not the case !

£40K? Really? I read an article recently that said a typical BMW dealer salesman would be earning £30K and the industry generally really struggled to retain staff, with weekend working for the younger guys particularly being mentioned as an issue. Bearing in mind how the last 12mths have been, it's hard to imagine average pay would be up.I can't see why you think it strange that a car salesperson at a presitge manufacturer could afford to spend £4k on a watch, I would imagine most of them are earning £40k plus.
As for buying expensive watches then would this be a Southern thing, maybe? In my last big corporate job the Southern based people all seemed stupidly "flash" and it was all funded with massive credit card debts. Same guys would think nothing of spending a grand on a suit, and this is for visiting industrial premises. Each to their own etc, but I earn a heck of a lot more that the figures mentioned here and there's no way I would spend £4K on a watch!
Re wages, £40k is far from uncommon for a decent salesman, I've known (although not achieved just yet!) £80k a year salesmen, all from a basic which is usually around £10-13k.
Yes, hours are long (I've got an easy life at my current 50 hours a week plus Blackberry time, previously working 55+ hours a week) but its good fun and if you're doing something you enjoy the hours fly by.
Why wouldn't they spend thousands on a watch? I wear a Speedmaster Professional and am thinking about a Submariner possibly this year, maybe next.

Also if someone earns £40k a year whats to say he hasn't got more spare cash than someone who earns £80k a year. Young salesman £40k a year, small mortgage (living with Mum & Dad even), no other expenses with lots of spare cash as opposed to a more established/experienced salesman/sales manager, earning £80k a year with a stay at home wife looking after 2 rug rats, exec new build 5 bedroom house, 2 cars and a massive mortgage. He may earn more than double, but that doesn't mean he has spare money to spend on flash cars or watches.
eta, £40k is easily attainable for a salesman worth his salt, £80k + for the high performers. Don't kid yourself about having to sell prestige stuff to get there either. I know a guy selling Hyundai earning £50-60k, he just sells alot.
