Noticed the last few times the car was out during crimbo that when cold I get the noise of like the belts slipping and once warm it goes reasonably quickly. The car is going in soon for some odds and sods and was going to get it changed.

However, the car has been sitting for two weeks and I just started it up and the squealing was there. I had the clam up at this point and it actually sounds like the pulleys rather than the belt. Went for a drive and it took quite some time before the noise went.

Do I just need to lube them or is there something else going on?

Yeah, going to try that in the morning. If its not that could it be anything more serious?

Bondy,
i have had the same thing for a month or so now, its embarrasing when you start it from cold.

if its the same noise as mine it could well be the idler pulley, I have not got round to changing mine yet but it is on the list.
I sprayed mine with a lubricant and it instntly went away. Get one of the cans with the plastic tube on it and give it a quick squirt, its about on the same level as the tension pulley but forwards towards the condensor.
I believe they are from a mavarick

Don't use WD40 as it'll be back within a few days. Get some proper silicone lubricant.

This will do the trick.

something like this might be better

Most bearing distributors stock something like that

Cheers guys.

It is the actual belt, as soon as the wd40 touched the inside of the belt (drivers side of the engine belt) it went. It did come back but nit at idle! And after the 1hr drive home it went. I was going to ask what's the stuff to use in the belt and you have already answered. Thx

Just use small layer of grease on the pulley side of the belt, it lasts for ages.

As Adrian says, you should use a belt dressing not lubricant. The squeal, if it's coming from the belt, is due to the belt slipping and lubricating it will hide the sound but not cure the source of the problem.
Belt dressing gives the belt more traction and will illiminate the problem.

By the looks of it the bearings get a bit dry, I have tried the silicon spray grease but its not that long lasting and soon comes back. I dont think they cost that much so would be better to change it

probably quite old and I'm planning to get it changed when it goes in for charge cooler and oil gauge in a few weeks time. Just want to sort it for now.

Cheers guys.

Where's the oil gauge going?....I am still looking to find someone who has successfully removed the centre fascia without cutting the dash (and can then provide guidance)?

Its going in the black bit bellow the lower part of the silver part. I have a mocal oil temp/pressure gauge with black suround. Getting a body shop to cut the hole.

On Nobleparts is so step by step instructions with pics showing how to remove the fascia.

Read those...failed at the first hurlde as there was no way to even see behind the fascia let alone get my arm up nearby frown.

Let me know what is behind the area where you are putting the gauge (hopefully nothing) as was playing with the idea of hard wiring and fitting a SatNav unit there as they are so cheap now.

Does the M400 not come with 2 gauges in the lower dash ?? I'm thinking of fitting oil temp gauge as well .

yes it does. Both gauges are in the silver part. But the involves removing it. Where I'm fitting mine it's just a hole and feed the wires down into the tunnel.
