Been trawling the late ski deals and nothing particulary cheap on offer. I've got used to grabbing a late bargain this time of year but no luck as yet.. Is the recession over ??

Travel agents didn't bother with the capacity they used too. So little surplus to shift ensuring margins are kept higher even if revenue slips.
Worth calling hotels and chalets direct and getting flights. Resorts seem a little quiet across the board talking to a few people in various places. So there are empty rooms you just might have to organise it yourself.

DIY.

Easyjet flights are silly, silly cheap at the moment if you book a couple of weeks in advance.

Hotels and apartments are easy to find.

Travel around Europe is simple simple simple.

Haven't been on a package tour since I was about 11 years old, we've always 'done it ourselves' from the moment my sister and I were old enough to cope with the travelling.

It's much more fun too!

Where do you want to go?

Hoping to get something for this next weekend, flying Sun preferably. Looked at DiY and not as cheap as we thought. Tignes/Val/or any biggish resort will do nicely. Transfer is expensive as well as flight + Mrs Toy doesnt see the joy in prolonged travelling.
Used a few catered chalet companies in the past, Dec' infact and got some fantastic..£200-300 deals but all seem booked up..
Travel Zoo have some slightly better offers tho ta.

You'll find most of the alps Saturday to Saturday, rather than Sundays, it's just how hotels and apartments work in Europe ski resorts.

You can get return flights from Gatwick (you didn't say which airport is nearest to you) to Geneva for £100 each, which is pretty cheap given you want to go in only one week (flights are much cheaper a month in advance).

You should be able to get an apartment in Chamonix for about £200 plus for the week.

Transfers are 1 hour from Geneva to Cham, you can get on the bus for around 15 euros, or a private transfer is around 20-30 euros each way.

For a 'very cheap' week away, this is probably your best bet.

Door to door can be around 5-6 hours.

If you're looking for quick travelling times, avoid Val d'Isere, it's 4 hours from the airports!

Doesnt work out really cheap when compared to a catered chalet (been spoiled you know) at say £500ish. Eating in France is v expensive, ok can self cater but not really my idea of a holiday (did i mention i've been spoiled)
I've done a lot of chalet trips now and like the friendly atmosphere plus ski guiding/social skiing means i can leave mrstoy in safe hands. Oh and free wine with meals and tea and cake when you come in cold and knackered..
Manchester is prob our best bet and a lot of chalet co's do use Sun flights. (need to be home Sat eve).
I've found a trip which fits our 'rather tight' criterea but is going to cost more than i'd hoped but the snows good and lifes to short to worry about a few quid. In Val but from Chamberry which makes a shorter transfer and should be on the slopes Sun afternoon.. smile

I'm afraid if you've got such a tight criteria, you'll just have to pay the asking price, or not go at all!

A 'last minute bargain' is seldom going to be the holiday you dream of, rather what's available last minute.... If the two meet, then happy days, but you'll have to be lucky!

They cost a *little* more than that!

I'm still biting my virtual tongue from the other thread a few weeks ago where you described Chamonix as a concrete jungle...! smile

I'm in the market myself at the moment - probably for a (small) group of us, just to make things harder (about 4-6 people). Will check Travel Zoo - are there any other recomendations for cheap package deals?

Ah, sorry, depends who you go with I suppose, but I've used Alpybus in the past, which was about 18 Euros each way?

Apologies for my Chamonix description! I grew up in Austria ski resorts, which are, on the whole, a lot prettier than Chamonix.... In all fairness, most large French resorts are the same.

I can't stand the style of ski resort chamonix is where you all end up in the same place, val d'isere is how i like it, you can ski from somewhere to somewhere else and not do the same run twice in a day.
Whereas in Chamonix it felt like you were skiing in a bowl.

it's a funny old place, some folks like it, some don't.

i first skied in cham in '91, lived there for large chunks of the last decade (winter and summer) and yet there is still a whole HEAP of short touring access lines that I haven't skied yet. I could stand in the town square and point at line after line that i've got on my 'to do' list (and not all stupid scary steep stuff either).

tis a wonderful and special place in my book smile

... and i might just move back there again !

I totally agree, the skiing is excellent. If you found it like a 'bowl', you should have taken a guide!

'Tis indeed a wonderful and special place. (Made of concrete.)

To be fair I had 2 novice skiiers with me so I only got down black runs on the last day I was there, perhaps it was the runs that made it feel limited, it didn't feel like you could ski to somewhere like you can in val d'isere where you can ski from val all the way to tignes, get a funicular railway and then ski home again

Check out the bus companies guys. Yes, its a long time to sit on a bus, but when you add in the fact that theres no real check in, the baggage allowance is pretty lax, and theres no transfers to worry about, it starts to add up.

I'm off to Tignes this weekend, return travel from London for fifty quid.

Cant grumble!

Sure am, my Dad just got back yesterday says the conditions are absolutely spanking, and Chardons is bang on what you need, simple, cheap, good hearty fodder and lager on tap.

We're actually staying at the one over the road 'Hatiers' or something, double room. Cant wait... I presume you've stayed with them before?

Travel Zoo does seem to have some good deals at the moment - are there any things you need to be wary/sceptical about? The range of prices for apparently similar hotels/resorts is quite dramatic.
