Withdrew £120 from an ATM and then stuffed it in my jeans pocket.

Got home, jeans off, in the shower.

Out shower, trip to the washing machine and bung in.

Jeans are ready so put them to dry.

  • Half an hour later*
'Didn't I withdraw money earlier?'

Sprint downstairs to jeans and luckily the money is still intact.

So what's the most valuable item you have lost (or nearly lost) in the wash?

Washed my usb flash drive (contained work stuff) once by mistake (left in jacket's pocket) - worked fine once dry.

I reckon over the last 30+ years I must have lost about 5000 socks in the wash.

Surely most washing products contain things which send those UV fake banknote detectors mad?

Maybe, if it does just go and exchange it. It doesnt end up like normal paper.

Any slightly worn/torn/creased bank notes do send the self-checkout machines in Sainsbury's crazy - they refuse to take them, spitting them out. Leaving you to pay with a debit card or exchange the said note at the cigarette kiosk for a new one. Bloody pain.

My £1500 hearing aid has survived a few minutes in the wash a few times. They're some panicked minutes waiting for the door lock timer, I tell you smile

I've found the hotter the wash then the more it gets damaged, as i did the same recently on a 30 wash it came out clean and intact.
