do you really need to ask?

typical civil service mismanagement, coupled with unbelievable pension benefits...

lack of profit motive in the public sector means they can do what the fk they like. And you and me can pay. So suck it up.

Council tax could be increased by hundreds of millions of pounds while the worst impact would be seen on local services.
What fking services, with the exception of the local library, the police, the firebrigade, strret lamps & sporadic refuse collection, i get absolutley nothing for the £1700 I'm forced to give the local council every year tts the lot of them

I'm sorry...but fk em.

They can do without a pension, just like the private sector!

Don't know why these guys think the Public sector is so special!

Maybe if they hadn't risked it all in the first place, there would still be a pension fund left.

Nothing. I don't think they differentiate between Civil and Public servants around here. They are all classed as bad as bankers, actually I think they they think they are worse, because apparently the bankers for all their largesse and reckless lending, privatising profit and nationalising debt, are at least a wealth (tax) creating class. Although those insisting on any contractual bonuses (bankers or anyone one else) are nothing like public and civil service insisting on their contractual pensions. All bloodsucking leeches, except...

Wirral are trying to close down the library, we have very little in the way of proper policing, only time I've ever needed the firebrigade they were on strike & the bins dont get collected if its a bank holiday or slightly cold/wet, we have NO lesiure facilities (something more down at heal areas have in abundance)

thefreedictionary defines civil service as:

'the service responsible for the public administration of the government of a country. It excludes the legislative, judicial, and military branches. Members of the civil service have no official political allegiance and are not generally affected by changes of governments'

I'm pretty sure that covers it? Pardon me a thousand times if there is a slight difference. My point was that the public sector is riddled with fkups like this, as no one seems to be particularly accountable. The black holes they create just mean more taxes for you and me. If you like it, maybe you could pay my share? smile

I am staring down the barrel of a council tax bill of £2800, plus another £6000 of business rates for a very small office. I dont think that I'm getting much in the way of value to be honest. This story highlights that there's more pain to come!!

Property taxes are a good way of raising revenue because property can't be hidden. They can see it, they can tax it. Maybe some of the tax is spent on local services, maybe some of it isn't, maybe some of the the national revenue such as income tax and vat is spent on local services, there isn't really much of a connection.

US dictionary.

Try the wiki

"In general use, the term civil servant in the United Kingdom does not include all public sector employees; although there is no fixed legal definition, the term is usually defined as "a servant of the Crown working in a civil capacity who is not the holder of a political (or judicial) office; the holder of certain other offices in respect of whose tenure of office special provision has been made; [or] a servant of the Crown in a personal capacity paid from the Civil List".[2] As such, the Civil Service does NOT include government ministers (who are politically appointed), members of the British Armed Forces, police officers, local government officials, members of the National Health Service, or staff of the Royal Household. As of 2007, there are approximately 532,000 (499,000 full-time equivalent) civil servants in the Home Civil Service.[3]"

No one wants to be blamed for something that is nothing to do with them at all. And on this one the civil service is unconnected.

Of course someone will be along to tell you Wirral's pension deficit is a drop in the ocean compared to the "unfunded" civil service pension liability (which therefore is funded by taxation, so yes that's you to) or maybe NHS, or the Royal Mail.

Actually nail head. And that's why car drivers are easy to tax and tax, Fuel duty, Road Tax, VAT, they know where you live & you need a licence.
You don't get a riot with it either like say community charge poll tax, you're easy to find when you have property, so it's cheap to administer.

I bet the government would do away with cash if they starting with a blank piece of paper, they are certainly neither simplifying the tax system nor are HMRC targetting it's abuses, just going for easy quick hits, thats ordinary 'legit' business and individuals.

Why not cut the wages of staff and make redundancies? Or is it easier to punish the private sector and force them to make cuts and go out of business?
