Traffic cops strange pull over

Just been watching a traffic cops programme in which they were in a village with speed guns to slow down bikers going to castle combe on a race day. During which a bloke in a Mondeo flashed his lights at the bikers to warn them of the police and subsequently got pulled himself by them and got a damn good telling off for doing so. Correct me if im wrong but what the police are doing here is effectively telling people off for slowing others down, or more likely, stopping the police making money.

AFAIK, it is not illegal to flash others to warn them of a speed trap.

Only if they then slow down due to the warning can you be prosecuted for, presumably, perverting the course of justice.

I think it seems silly too, surely slowing the oncoming drivers down prevents accidents and the death of little children who sit in the road?
