Hi All,

I've been quoted £470 for an Insp 2 on my E39 M5 - from both BMW and a renowned Sussex Indie.

Whats your opinion - is this a good price or do other reputable indies in the South offer anything substantially different?

Cheers!

Seems like a reasonable price.

After a bit of phoning around and hagglng, I paid £440 to have it done at the BMW dealer, but that was about a year and a half ago.

Pretty good - for a BMW main dealer.

I'll be taking my M3 to www.a-ltuning.com. Seems very reasonable and sponsors the m3 cutters website. Based in Essex.

Well they're certainly reasonable, shame they aren't more local to me, by the time I factor in fuel and travelling time, its a no go.

The E39 M5 is not that expensive for routine servicing, plus even the very last ones now qualify for the 4 plus discount.

Thats very true, mainly because there isnt a great deal to do. The g'box + diff are never touched as the oil is considered a lifetime fluid. Thats about £100 on oil saved straight away. The hardest thing to do is the spark plugs and thats only because its so time consuming.

Maybe there is much more to do on my breadvan then......I got the best discount I could on the Insp 1 and it was still £670.......

That's because it requires the valve clearances to be checked at each inspection service, which is quite a time consuming job. E39 M5s don't need this done at all.

Obviously being a bit of a womble here but I can't see an Essex branch under 'contacts'. Berkshire and Hertfordshire yes, but not Essex. confused

Possibly because A-L Tuning pay their people less, have less expensive premises or do not offer yet the same level of service as a full BMW dealer or top end specialist. Maybe they need the business more and have a greater margin for price reduction?

nah, they'll run on used chip fat as long as you chuck in something flammable like cheap vodka now and again to pep it up a bit.....

biggrin

Seriously though - its 5 litre V8 pulling around a whole heap of metal and gizmos, and churning out 400bhp, yet is perfectly capable of 21mpg plus - compared to other big lumps produced by Jaguar, Mercedes and the rest its an incredibly efficient engine. (and its not efficient by sacrificing low down torque - it gives its power right from 1000rpm - when all our kids are driving electric cars, it will be an absolute classic!)
