TV interference

...been told today my Chim is (still) causing neighbours' TVs to lock up (Sky and freeview etc)... I'm assuming this is ignition related but have ensured the plug leads are in good nick (they're new), resistive and that all earths etc are sound, Running out of ideas now but want to sort it... I'm on aftermarket coilpacks and am wondering whether there might be any benefit in putting a tin shroud around the packs given it's a plastic car? Any suggestions?

Sounds like a load of boolox, TBH. I'd at least want a demonstration of the effect before I did anything.

Do you, perchance, have quite loud exhausts?

My neighbour and also my parents have said the same thing - neither mind though as they love the sound . It all started when i changed my HT leads from standard ones to Magnecor. At the same time, my rev counter went mental - the needle dances all over the place and cant really hold the correct reading. I will be changing back to standard leads.

Yep, same here. My neighbour has complained about mine doing the same thing. Unfortunately (or fortunately) we've never got on and it's just another thing on the list that he complains about.

IIRC Pupp has had this problem for quite some time now.

I can't see why it only be TVRs that did this?

I dont think it is just TVR's. A few years ago when almost all the 16 year old kids round my way had scooters with immensely noisy exhausts, each time they drove past my parents house, their picture on their TV would flicker a little.

EMC is a bit of a black art to be honest. You could go to a lot of effort to try and reduce the amount of RF you emit and actually make the problem 10 times worse. You could go to the effort of creating a Faraday Cage in the engine bay, but it might prove difficult!

Best just to tell the neighbour to do a standard 'Marconi reset' and switch his Sky on and off at the plug when you start the car up!

I'm sort of assuming that a combination of possibly marginal install of their Sky dish or whatever together with the marginal screening afforded by a placcie car like a Tiv might be enough to cause problems...

And the other part of the truth is that in the vast majority of cases the problem is the TV installation.

TVs are notorious for being non-compliant for EMC immunity. (which they MUST have by law)

I was on an EMC course recently through work and they showed us some testing taking place on big-name TVs, to say the results were shocking is a bit of an understatement, both in terms of susceptibility and emissions. Ferrites on the power cables didn't help!

I've was told that my chim has this effect on one of our neightbours TV's, worse when they have digital TV on (but poor signal in my area anyway). since changed the leads from Magnecors to some std silicone leads. To be honest though I don't know if it has made any difference. They haven't complained any more but then as I don't leave it running outsode their house it would only be for a very short time pariod anyway.

don't know why the TVR has this effect and other cars don't but I've stopped caring about it to be honest.

Wonder how I'd find out if this effects the old witch across the roads TV?

If it does I foresee a lot of petrol being burnt on my driveway.

Mine interferes with our tv aswell, causes the screen to break up and go blocky.

Strangely enough mine had Magnecors fitted last year and we noticed it after they were put on. Is there a pattern emerging here?
Didn't notice the TV interference before but that could be co-incidence.

At the same time they fitted the Magnecors they took off some suppressors that were on the old leads.

Maybe the old leads were noisy and supressors were fitted, or perhaps Magnecors are the source of the problem?

Pupp, you don't live near Weedon do you..? Was talking to a bloke last week that said every time his neighbour started his car it cause TV interference!!

Ok, serious Q... anyone see any harm in using a couple of 2.2uF capacitors across the two coilpack +12v feeds to earth? (wasted spark set up driven from Emerald ECU)
