One of the recurring points made by people about the current crop of terrorists, is that the Muslim world seems to publicly do very little against terrorism

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/faith/art...

Reading this article, it looks like that is changing, starting with the publication of a 600 page "ruling" on suicide bombers and terrorists.

Yes I’m sure we could all ask the question of whether or not it will actually change anything, but it is worth applauding at least for its intent

Yup...this is a good thing.

All religions need to speak up more about this, since these terrorist actions are all carried out in the name of religion, and that is how they go about gaining support.

If the religions can speak out more, maybe the younger members of the communities will not side with the extremists so quickly.

It will also help reassure those narrow minded people who like to lump all muslims and terrorists together.

More public declaration against the terrorists is needed. Especially since the media seem to give the extremists a lot of undue attention.

It all depends on how much weight it holds with young people, hopefully a lot, especially with people like anjem choudary advocating a coup to get sharia law.

Sufi? Aren't the Shia just going to shout "Splitters" across the Colosseum?

Sufi's have always been one of the more peaceful sects of Islam. They are neither Sunni or Shia. Not sure what proportion of the UK Moslem population are Sufis though.

Over the past couple of years the British Government have decided that funding Sufi groups like the Quilliam Foundation and the Sufi Moslem Council is the way to go.

They are consistant in their messages of non-violence etc but I'm not sure how much influence they actually hold.

Certainly needed.
Good for them.

Its apossitive move yes.

however these young men see themselves as freedom figthers or liberators or warriors for allah so its an easy get out for them to claim the fatwa does not apply.

I however aplaud it.

It isn't their responsibility to do anything though, is it? They're not the ones doing the killing.

Indeed, this is a very positive move.

The Ramadhan Foundation has been trying for some time to promote moderate Muslim views and to oppose and condemn terrorism. More power to their elbow.

Well done them.

All we need now is a fatwa telling all muslims to give their loyalty to their chosen nation state ahead of their loyalty to the ummah and we'll start getting somewhere.

I am pleased to see this - I know many Muslims (of varying levels of devoutness) and they are all horrified what is done in the name of their religion.

How many Caliphs, Ayatollahs, Mullahs or Imams have made a call stating terrorism is bad, is against Islam and so on?
I know a few Imams have, but no-one higher up the chain has really

Really, you haven't considered the possibility that they have, but that rags like the Daily Mail would never print such a thing?

Thid id ehy the media are a big problem here.

They are quick to give the extremists a voice...but never seem to give the people, who speak out against terrorism, a voice.

Granted, if enough people were speaking out, then it would be harder to ignore...but the media do like sensationalism, and you just don't get that from the 'sensible' side of any arguement/ cause.

If people took a stand, and actually refused to buy papers, etc that give a voice to the extremists, then maybe they'd start to change their tune.

Well it was a 600 page fatwa... that would take a long time to produce.

The only DM articles I read are the ones linked to on forums like this, and I have not heard of many higher ups in Islam calling for an end to terrorism.

It is still from the branch of Islam that is not directly involved in the violence. How many Sunni higher ups have called for this?
As far as I know, Saudi Imams have done so, as have Imams in USA and UK.

Do you know of any "higher ups", "in Islam"? I don't. Perhaps you could name a few. Not that any you do name are obliged to say anything, mind, since they're not responsible, or culpable.

Good on them. What authority/influence in the eyes of the Muslim community does the fatwah authors hold?
