After wiggling round in the M3 this winter I've had a good look round the rubber bits of my cars bottom as it has been a bit, err, vague and has a mind of its own.

After having a good look around I saw that the rubbers for the 4 main mounting points for the diff (rear subframe?) are looking very sad for themselves. About 1/4 of each one is simply not there any more.

Well past being a bit worn!

So it needs taken to somewhere knowledgeable about M3s (E36) and the rear end dismantled, new bushes / new bits put on and remantled.

I also removed the heat shield as it was only mounted at one out of 4 points and rattling like a good 'un.

Anyone got any recommendations for decent garages that know what they're doing in or near my vicinity?

Cheers

Quick Google finds this:

No idea what they're like but look like they could help you.

Hahaha!

Cheers mate but I wasted a days holiday taking it to those idiots.

"Sorry sir, our computer can only cope with OEM suspension. Our engineers are worried they'll make your car handle worse.". I told them it had upgraded coilover adjustable suspension when I booked it, they told me the above 8 hours after I took it down there.

Oh, and "You can't adjust the ride height on your suspension" AFTER me telling them I'd fitted BC coilovers (with full height adjustment all round).

Typical "garage" that just does what the computer tells them and completely cannot cope with anything that requires thinking or knowledge.

This is why I'm asking here, I want somewhere that PH members have used and recommend.

OK, fair enough.

In that case, here's two:

1. Saab Centre in Mursley, just off the A421 towards Buckingham. They are, as the name suggests, Saab specialists, but have done wonders with my various Saabs over the years, AND the owner, Andy, is a hardcore bike racer, so knows a thing or two about suspension, coilovers, and whatnot.

2. Monkfish Performance, in Great Horwood. They're Porsche and HSV experts, rather than BMW, but know everything there is to know about custom suspension setups et al.

Probably not exactly what you wanted, but if noone has better suggestions then these guys are worth a look, I've spent thousands with both of them :-)

Thorney motorsport are M3 specialists and know everything about suspension setup as they race and prep there own car in the CSL Cup.

Does that help.

I see your point for the other 2 garages but they are not BMW specific let alone M Power kit.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I pass very close to Thorneys every day on the way to work so that looks like an ideal place.

I'll visit them and have a chat and a gander round the place, make sure they know their onions before giving them the car smile

Cheers!

Good point. I know of Thorneys but never used them (as I haven't have a BMW while I've lived in MK) so I guess I sit corrected. Good luck.

Now, can anyone suggest somewhere I can get my elderly LS400 serviced in MK? biggrin

Are you just after a reliable indy garage that doesn't specialize in any make?

If so, my neighbor owns Unit 4 Motors in Bletchley and I can vouch for him being a sound bloke.

Not used them myself but BMWorx in Aylesbury have a good reputation and aren't a million miles away from MK

Picked it up from Thorneys after work today and it is a massive improvement over what it was driving like.

Full geo setup, new power flex bushes at the rear, two new rear tyres, full inspection II service, rear seal on the gearbox.

They couldn't quite set up the suspension perfectly, there are seized bolts on the rear and both track rod ends are also seized up, but as is everything is very close to spot on they've left it for now.

If tyre wear is abysmal or the handling goes to hell again I'll have them sort out those bits. (the seized front track rod ends apparently require a whole new steering rack, so an excuse to put on a Z3 rack smile )

There is a small knocking from the n/s rear which sound very much like something rattling round the boot. Had a quick look and can't spot anything, so this weekend I'll remove everything loose from the car and see if it's still there. If it is I'll pop back and let them have a look / listen. Doesn't sound anything major and the gals and guys at Thorneys are spot on so not worried by it!

So thanks for the recommendations, bob on, good bunch and car is now a very happy car.

Can't say the same about my wallet. £1676.89 lighter. It's sitting wimpering in the corner trying to hide. Ah well, I do buy these cars that are cheap to maintain and then drive them like a 90 year old granny biggrin
