Young Driver Challenge

Young Welsh drivers could win a car in this safety intiative

The need to improve the driving skills of young people in Wales is behind the launch of an important road safety initiative, the Daewoo Young Driver Challenge, organised by the Road Safety Council of Wales and supported by the Welsh Assembly.

In 2002 some 2844 car occupants aged between 17 and 24 were killed or injured in road crashes on Welsh roads. The principle objective of this new road safety initiative is to reduce this toll by providing young drivers with practical help and advice and build on the driving skills necessary to cope with today's busy road environment. The successful Challenge candidate will win a Daewoo Matiz, the compact hatchback popular with young people, plus a year's free insurance provided by Hill House Hammond.

The Daewoo Young Driver Challenge, which is open to all 17-24 year olds in Wales until Saturday 28th February, has been developed to have four distinct road safety related elements. Phase 1, the 'Challenge to Enter' requires that the entrant collects a leaflet from Daewoo dealers or Hill House Hammond offices throughout Wales and completes a simple questionnaire and returns it to the Road Safety Council of Wales. The entry form is also available and can be completed on-line at www.roscow.org.uk/challenge or by telephoning 02920 250600.

Phase 2, the 'Challenge to Improve', provides each candidate with a free "Be a Better Driver" training day, including both theory and practical sessions, at appropriate locations throughout Wales with specially trained driving instructors.

Two qualifiers from each of the 22 local authorities in Wales will be selected to go through to Phase 3, the 'Challenge to Drive' element. This will take place in a contestant's own area and involve a two intensive session with an advanced driving examiner from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents or the Institute of Advanced Motorists. The Challenge committee will select the final eight qualifiers based upon assessment of all phases.

Phase 4, the 'Challenge to Succeed' brings together the final eight qualifiers for a better driving event to be undertaken at the police driving headquarters in Bridgend on Sunday 27th June. A full day of theory and practical driving will be provided by experienced police drivers and all eight finalists will receive a prize with one young driver taking away a brand new 04 registered Daewoo Matiz compact hatchback inclusive of three year's servicing, warranty and AA roadside cover and one year's free insurance provided by Hill House Hammond.

Steve Baker, Executive Officer of the Road Safety Council of Wales said: "Passing your driving test is not enough to keep you safe on the roads. The Daewoo Young Drivers Challenge, being launched today, aims to bridge the gap between the basic level that drivers achieve in passing their test and the knowledge and experience required to become a good driver. The initiative helps to put wise heads on young shoulders and young drivers throughout Wales are invited to take up the CHALLENGE."

South Wales, you see. Not Brunstromia.

Personally, I think it's a fanstastic idea! I hope that if they're going to run one in Thames Valley, they do so in the next 6 months or so, or I'll be too old.

A free car is better than no car. That's my excuse anyway...
