c£18k budget, E class or R R opinions please

Its time for me to replace our old 1999 Merc E320CDI estate.

Thinking of either a TD6 Range Rover around 2003/4 and getting it chipped.

Or say an '05 E class or 5 series or A6 estate.

Need space for a dog, ski trips, summer hols into europe, school run etc etc.

I wonder if anyone has weighed up a Range Rover v a large german estate.

Have driven Merc estates in various guises for 10 years and a Cayenne S for a year and wonder how the Range will compare.
